Thanks - we are down 9.7 to 7.5 at half time.

... the other thread was tongue-in-cheek, I don't think that the bashing will start until 3/4 time...

The AFL seems to have lost interest in the game. Are there any score updates since half-time?

Update: They changed the link instead of just updating the page....

              3Q time - North leads 11.13 to 10.5

At least we are kicking straight!!

Match report from the AFL site. We lost...

Good to see James and Saddo(!) in the best players. Schaubs sounds like a bit of a worry though.

according to news we are 27 points down in final quarter. Bulletin focussed on Kangaroos, Motlop has down a shoulder. Said we were disappointing.

The Kangaroos have won their first match of 2004 by 23 points in the Wizard Regional Challenge Series after producing an impressive final quarter against Sydney at Optus Oval on Friday.

                    The Kangaroos 13.16 (94) defeated Sydney 11.5 (71).

For the majority of the match it was the Jones show ? with Kangaroos Corey and Chad ? proving to be fine players for the winners.

The unrelated teammates finished with four goals between them and were busy across half-forward and inside the 50-metre arc.

Corey, 23, finished with two goals for the match and showed further encouraging signs that he will again be a permanent fixture in the Roos? best line-up in 2004 after notching 19 games in his third senior season in 2003.

New recruit Chad booted two goals for the match, while he pulled in a spectacular mark in the opening term.

The 19 year-old, 196cm key forward was the Kangaroos second selection in last year?s National AFL Draft, when he was taken at No.24 from Claremont.

A former wicket-keeper in Western Australian grade cricket, Jones, is the younger brother of Brett, who was also drafted at the end of last year as a rookie for West Coast. He too was a fine cricketer representing the Western Australian second eleven.

Kangaroos skipper Adam Simpson and midfielder partner Daniel Harris were also impressive.

Key Sydney forward Barry Hall again was a tireless worker, booting three goals for the match, as well as providing plenty of targets across half-forward.

Veteran Swan and 2003 All-Australian Paul Williams was again his ultra-consistent self, while Heath James ? who has had a shocking run with hamstring and knee injuries in recent years ? showed plenty of promise.

The Roos lost talented youngster Daniel Motlop with a shoulder injury during the second term, while veteran Sydney defender Andrew Schauble hobbled from the ground in the third quarter with a hamstring strain.

Motlop?s injury occurred after falling to the ground, while Schauble?s came after attempting to soccer the ball off the ground with resulted in a fresh-air kick.

Sydney went into the match without several senior players including reigning Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes ? who was the Swans best last week against Collingwood.

Mercurial Swans forward Michael O?Loughlin, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Adam Schneider, Ben Mathews, Matthew Nicks, Stephen Doyle, Ben Fixter and emerging midfielder Jarrad McVeigh were also missing.

Senior Roos Leigh Colbert, Jess Sinclair, Daniel Wells, Mark Porter and Shane Clayton were absent from their line-up.

The Kangaroos will next play Fremantle at Mandurah next Saturday, while Sydney will meet the loser of the St Kilda and Essendon Wizard Home Loans Cup semi-final in Newcastle next Saturday.

                    KANGAROOS: 4.4 9.7 11.13 13.16 (94)
                    SYDNEY: 4.4 7.5 10.5 11.5 (71)

                    GOALS: Kangaroos: Brown 2, Harris 2, Ch.Jones 2, Co.Jones 2, Firrito, S.Harvey, McKernan, Motlop, Petrie
Sydney: Hall 3, Williams 2, J.Bolton, Crouch, James, O?Keefe, Powell, Sundqvist

Very pleasing to see Saddo ( we all knew that he would come good ) James and in particular ROK (first game 2004 ) in the best players. James is an absolute plus with his ability to play at both ends . Even though we were beaten it seems some positives came out of the match.

Did Ball play.? Schauble has done a hamstring. Honestly I don't think these games are doing us any good.

The swans had to fly back tonight no accommodation in Melbourne.
Well done AFL good organising put the Swans out again.

Just got back from the game not much to report this week. But a couple of things stood out.

Ablett - Roos was really into him at the 1/4 time break. Got the feeling he was given a chance this week with McVeigh ready to step in at anytime. He did improve in the latter stages of the third and fourth quarter but still seems to not be able to find the ball easily like others

Sunquist - Was probably at the same stage as Ablett, found a bit of the footy and used it well.

James - played very well swapping with Hall at CHF and FF. Lead and contested well and surprisingly kicked well for goal. Heart in your mouth stuff when you see him slide into marking contests and breaking packs

Schuable - Like last year needs to string plenty of games together to get his form back. Looks positively slow at present and has a turning circle like the queen mary. Don't think the hamstring is that serious as Roos consulted the doctor at 3/4 time who said he could play if they needed him

J Bolton - his kicking under pressure has improved out of sight, could just be on th cusp of a blinder this year

Crouch - Give Fixter the tagging role down back and let himm roam free, is a very creative player when given the chance

Overall - Biggest impression I got today is that when we come up against sides who play 4 talls up forward (today Petrie, McKernan, Leigh Brown and one other bloke I did not know) we are really going to struggle unless our midfield can restrict their supply. Barry, Bolton and Kennelly were forced alot of the time to fly and help team mates out, thus denying them the freedom to set up play down back.

                          DST

P.S Oh and just becuase everybody is interested, Saddington had another one of these up and dowm days. Did a couple of good things cutting off passes in defense and also got a bit of the footy when released further up field. Also turned the ball over a couple of times going forward.

Sitting right down on the fence it just looked so obivous that he is short of confidence, a couple of times he got caught in no mans land just becuase he didn't back himself.

Ball did play for about 10 minutes each quarter and had no impact. Looks well short of a gallop and will need all next week and a reserves game before round 1 to get him going.

                              Yeah I snuck down

                              Bolton and Williams best again

Ablett showed some flashes and ceratinly was his best - they do not seem to have worked out where he can play.

Heath James showed some real flashes of promise, as did Powell at the end - took some good marks.

At face value except for some passages we were very very ordinary. Very scratchy - but not much to read into it at this stage. Schauble's hamstring could be costly.

Rogers was ok - Crouch had some great periods attacking and winning the footy - could be worth giving him a roving role

L Barry was terrible at the beginning before improving

Buchanan played on D King bit of a tagging role wasn't disgraced.

Corey McKernan had the better of Meiklejohn.

Fosdike was ordinary - had no impact - really needed to step up and doesn't look to have.

                              N Davis was fair

Got no idea how O'Keefe was named amongst the best.

A lot of work left if we have finals pretensions.

Sundqvist is struggling as is Bevan/ McGlone.
