        There was a big article in the Sunday Tele abt it last week. Good on him. Altho calling out "Kick the bloody thing you silly Irishman" isn't going to be so accurate now!

          This is very good news. It would have to be a sign that he has no definite plans of returning home at any particular point, as I think under Australian laws he has to renounce his Irish citizenship?

            Not any more.
            12. Can Australian citizens have dual citizenship?
            Australian citizens may hold the citizenship of another country (dual citizenship) or more than two countries (plural citizenship).

            This happens when:
            people born in Australia automatically acquired, through a parent, another citizenship by descent;
            people become Australian citizens and who are able, under the law of their country of origin, to keep their other citizenship;
            Australian citizens are born overseas to an Australian citizen parent and who by the law of that country acquire that citizenship at birth; and
            Australians acquire the citizenship of another country automatically by legislation of that country, for example, through marriage.
            Following recent amendments to citizenship legislation, Australian citizens can acquire another citizenship from 4 April 2002 and retain their Australian citizenship

              Not sure that Australia ever makes you renounce your alternate citizenship, though there are some countries (eg USA, I believe) that do not allow you to retain their's if you take up another.

              I am a dual citizen and haven't been asked to relinquish my "other".

                No, I am pretty sure Australia unlike the USA allows dual citizenship and Ireland also allows it.

                I doubt Tadgh would have done it if he had to renounce his Irish citizenship - he was a permanent resident anyway.

                  In the article he said he'd hold both citizenships, but felt it was about time he took the plunge and became an Aussie cos we've been so good to him

                    i dont care if hes got citizenship with every country in the world, as long as he continues to improve and plays out the rest of his career with the swans.

                      Well at least we'll be able to claim him as ours now legitimately, rather than making out like he was ours before ala so many others in the past.....hell...isn't everyone in the world Australian somehow or another????

                      I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

                      If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

                        Embarassed to admit your other half is a Kiwi?

                          Nah - because I'm not actually a native Aussie, I don't share the same playful disdain that many have for those over the Tasman. In fact, I'd probably describe myself as a Kiwiphile!
