well thats the stark contradiction that, IMO, puts most of these so-called experts to shame. if mcveigh can win the rising star award, we will be right up there... just doesnt add up!

Good call penga - was thinking exactly the same thing myself - if we were to go down the ladder this year - the loss of cresswell and an ageing ( yet no signs this preseason of willo or maxie slowing down) midfield would be a strong catalyst.
Yet if Mcviegh was to go on and win the best young player in the competition he would have had a super year - ala Judd like - against some fairly strong young talent this year - we would go on and have an awesome year if that was the case.

I don't think that if McVeigh won the RS award we would have to have an awesome year. Didn't Goodes win RS in '99 and that wasn't a great year.

I know a few diehard Saints supporters who go every week, and they say a lot of Saints supporters who like to think they know a bit about the game (don't we all), say that Hayes is overrated and his disposal leaves a lot to be desired.
Something I will be taking note of as the season goes on.

That's my bandwagon - ATM Hayes is the most over-rated player in the competition. Should Barely - if at all make the top 50 - simply that Gerard Healy has over pumped his tyres.
As should have been expected on Sat night - hardly sighted.
This is the funny thing about The Aints - everyone likes to ignore the fact that far and away their best player is 32.
If Matt Burgan is tipping against us then we are top 4 certainties.
You don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby Ziegler

That's a bit over the top for a guy averaging over 20 disposals per game. Picking up 70 contested 'ball gets' hardly makes him a pure receiver either. Managing 87 clearances for the year is not too shabby also - one of the highest in the comp. He also picked up 161 tackles, again one of hte highest in the comp.

Top possession getter in the AFL did not make the top 50

That Sheahan doesn't rate West hardly supports your claim though.

I would during the 90s never have rated Wayne Campbel in the elite players of the league.
Similar players - both play very very wide, lick long loopy punts to the pocket that result in nothing.
Like Campbell clubs let him run around because he isn't very damaging - as he experienced on the SCG and Sat night - when played tight - useless.
This ineffectiveness is why the umpires were right to give him so few Brownlow votes (8) whereas his teamate Harvey could easily have won it.
If he made the top 50 it should be in the 40s
