The number 14 - Jude or Goodesy?

Just posted something on Bigfooty in response to a question about what makes numbers so special. I tried to explain the significance of #14 as I see it... and as an aside said that I think Goodes will be offered it.

    Here's my post, if you're interested: http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showth...hreadid=105461

I think it'll be offered to someone within the next couple of years. Who would you prefer? Goodes and Jude are the obvious possibilities out of the current squad. Would you prefer somebody else? Or is there nobody in the squad you think should wear it?

    neither unless they want it

Leo Barry? you star! We'll miss ya, ''Leapin''.

As good as both players are I don't think either.

Bolton, does not lift the team or excite the fans as much as the previous #14 owner.
Kelly that special aura when he got near the ball, or sometimes just ran on the ground. Not many players have that.

And as for Goodes, he is a very modest person. I don't think he would put himself in the same league as Kelly. He is a star in his own right in his own way.

I think they should keep it until a young "skinny" kid comes along with that special aura.

Maybe schniederman in a few years, he has that excitement factor when he gets near the ball, u know something will happen.

I'm not sure either would want it. They've been in their current numbers long enough to make them "their own", if that makes sense. When I think Jude Bolton, I think #24. Same with Goodes and #37.

It'll be an exciting young kid IMHO. Maybe not next year, but soon.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Hmm... but this is not necessarily so - look at Wayne Campbell - he had #9 for probably a decade, but he's switched to Jack Dyer's #17 this year.

Someone else that stands tall grabs the game by the scruff of the neck and says I am as good as the number deserves! (Potentially McVeigh or similar!)

I believe that this is more a decision by Richmond that the captain will wear No 17

I actually think that this wouldnt be a bad idea seeing as the two famous No14s with the Swans were not only amongst our greatest players but also our most inspirational captains. So maybe hold onto it until Stewie retires than start to award it to the new captain

I feel the importance attached to numbers is a bit overblown.

If the club felt 14 could only be given to some who warranted and if Goodesy wanted it, then he deserves it.

The guy is a freakin superstar and will go down as the first entry in the next team of the century. I plan to be around then

I have got agree with Des on this one. I think Goodes has made 37 his number. In years to come it will probably rank alongside 14 as being one of the most respected/recognised numbers in the club.

People who start to follow the Swans after such a good year last year will be looking for the stars and 37 is one of the brightest. I know that when I jumped on the bandwagon in '96 every game I was always keeping an eye out for 14 .

I've made it clear how I feel about this issue on other threads.

And I am totally in the opposite direction of the above post.

                      Give it to anyone.

Anyone who ISN'T already a star.

The munber is 'special' because legends started as players who grew into in.

So give it to a draft pick.

If he becomes a star, the number means even more.

If he doesn't then someone else gets a chance to wear it.

By giving it to Adam, or Michael, or Barry etc we are just making it a prize, and I think that's wrong.

Goodes should keep the 37 and make it his with a brownlow already to show for it

Jude is more of the in and under type who deserves the 14 with his courage and determination.

Agree, say we gave it to a prized recruit, would anyone be happy with that?

If we gave it to someone like McVeigh who will be a future star, that would be fine with me.

I would like to see somebody new in this jumper even if they have no particular pretensions towards greatness the jumper might prove an impetus to greatness or just a good omen to make a "good ordinary" player play above themselves.

Note: Maybe this is the inspiration that Saddington needs to get a grip on himself and start putting in.
