I'm with you there. it should go to whoever the next captain is (IMO Goodesy).

That doesn't mean it will always be given to the captain, however.

I again agree with CTS the legend becomes it's not manufactured. Kel showed that he had potential when he was awarded the Guernsey and the rest is history.

I like the thought that it is a number that will only have superstars wear it, but it's not necessarily going to be the case.

however to play along, if we want to pick out a young kid I'd either choose Schneider or McVeigh. I was really impressed with McVeigh's maturity and coolness under the pressure of Scott. last week. And Adam is probably my 2nd favourite player after Pebbles. He's a great with the right attitude. He's already expressed the opinion of wanting to play here for his entire career. Now that's putting your hand up.

Give it to Nick Davis. His performance for one and a half quarters is deserving.

They ought to give it Jude Bolton cause he embodies all the toughness and fighting spirit of Paul Kelly. Although he is not as brilliant as Kell and will never be, he is still a tough nut and maybe giving him 14 will inspire him to become a "great" not just the good player that he currently. I don't reckon Goodesey will change from 37. If they decide against giving it to either of these fellas they could always give it to Meiklejohn.

Another issue with changing numbers once you have established yourself is, what if they don't live up to the number.

I remember someone changed their number at another AFL club a few years who was already a good player.

They changed back soon after, as their game went to pieces.

Does anybody remeber who that was??? I had a feeling it was Wayne Campbell?? but i'm not sure

And I am totally in the opposite direction of the above post.

                  Give it to anyone.

Anyone who ISN'T already a star.

The munber is 'special' because legends started as players who grew into in.

So give it to a draft pick.

If he becomes a star, the number means even more.

If he doesn't then someone else gets a chance to wear it.

By giving it to Adam, or Michael, or Barry etc we are just making it a prize, and I think that's wrong.
                  Yup - couldn't agree more
Hand it to a young kid who's only been around a year or 2, but shows a bit of promise - but don't make a big deal about "anointing the new saviour with the sacred #14"
If we wait around for a player to become as good as Kel before he can earn the #14 we'll be waiting forever, and we'd never again see this clubs most famous number back on the park
It should be re-allocated next year, to a youngster who's earned a crack at a lower number - such as a Sundqvist, Powell, Bevan, Lew-Bob-Tom, or similar player
But the player shouldn't receive any more fanfare than the guys who get promoted to #8 and #16 for example

Actually - don't reallocate the #16 - that numbers given us nothing but disappointment for the last 10 years

I agree with CTS. We should hold it back for one of the kids. If Schneider continues to develop into a possible game-breaker for us, then he is well deserving of it. McVeigh was touted as the club's saviour at one point, so if he has a stellar year, then he is another candidate.

However, if Goodes has another big year, I think it would be an insult (not that he would see it that way) not to offer it to him first.

I think Schnieder should stick with #13 now - I can't see him changing

If Goodes was going to change from #37 he would have done so by now, I think we will see Goodesy stick out his career in 37

Give it to one of the young guys who has a number in the 30's or 40's this year, and would want to change to a lower number in 2005, but please don't look to "anoint the next great champion of the Swans" with the number, because whoever gets it more than likely will never be another Kel

I'd actually prefer to see it given to a key position type player rather than a midfielder, to avoid the comparisons to Kel - someone like Lew-Bob-Tom would fit the bill nicely
