BTW how did Amon go?
Gutsy Win

Amon played well - didn't kick any goals but he set one goal up that I can remember - didn't get an enormous amount of game time (that I can remember).
They played for 3 Qtrs like they did against the Hawks at the SCG last year and I thought we were going to have a repeat performance until Hall, Williams and Goodes started that 4th Qtr resurgence.
I've come to the conclusion they want to make sure I've still got my heart ticking with games like these.

Special mention has to go to the umps who were downright disgraceful.
They should go and umpire the same match as the Brisbane Goal Umpire from Thursday night and the Boundary Umpire from today's Roos vs Blues match.
Okay can someone please explain this for me:
Stats via AFL website
Sydney FF - 21 FA - 17
Geelong FF - 18 FA - 21
Also there is no freaking way we had more frees than Geelong..... unless we got 10 to 0 in the last quarter.
Also according to AFL.com James Kelly was BoG with a game high of 19 possessions - he actually had 22 not 19 - but whoever was on him it was either Jared or Heath - I remember was saying to someone at the game they need to change the matchups of Kelly, Kingsley and Playfair because they were dominating play every time they touched the ball - that's when I noticed BBH wandered down there to help out.
ETA: Was it just me or was that 3rd quarter a v. short quarter? It only went 23 mins.Last edited by gossipcom; 10 April 2004, 11:17 PM.Comment

I'm on the Chandwagon!!!
If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

I thought the umpires missed a few frees, but they also missed a few on the Cats side too.Comment

As I've said many times....all I ask for is consistency (good or bad) from the umpires so you know what they will and won't pay and can play to those rules.
The umpiring was consistently inconsistent which leaves you with no confidence in how things will be called.

Thanks for clearing that up Mike B - just seemed really short at the game.
Also I would like to add the Adam Goodes being pinned for holding the ball was a joke.Comment

It was only in the last quarter that we started to attack and kick long to the danger zone. I think Doyle (who was used as a key forward for the match) was off most/all of the last 1/4. You'll notice the last 1/4 gave key forwards an opportunity (Goodes/Hall/Ball were all invoved).
We may as well play a small quick player if we are going to persist with this gameplan, and give Doyle a proper run in the twos.
I would agree this was not particularly "gutsy" more lucky. Geelong are the ONLY team we would have beaten last night, they were hopeless."As a player he simply should not have been able to do the things he did. Leo was a 185cm, 88kg full-back and played on some of the biggest, fastest and best full-forwards of all time, and constantly beat them." Roos.
Leo Barry? you star! We'll miss ya, ''Leapin''.Comment

I reckon we're being a bit tough here. Either the whole team had a collective brain spasm and forgot how to play, or they believed the media hype that they couldn't lose - or Geelong had the only game plan since Hawthorn last year that can bring the team undone. I favour the latter theory and blame/applaud Cressa.
I suspect we only looked good in the last quarter because the Cats fell off their game and let us in. And we won with our standard game of fast rebound. Maybe Roos needs to look at an emergency strategy of a completely different emergency game like, perhaps, when all else fails bomb long to our forwards and to contested marks? As it's not our style it'd certainly confuse the opposition.Comment

You get 4 points for wins like this, same as we would have recieved for beating Brisbane.
I see Norff may miss Archer and Colbert next week.
The only player I would describe as 'gutsy' was Kennelly who was clearly playing extremely inhibited. Nervous wait on he.
No mention of Brad Seymour, to quote the great man "still giving away goals".
I think our guys played nervously and within themselves. They need to be more attacking and take more risks. Some guys wer very very very slow to pick options (special mention to Craig Bolton).
What exactly was Mark McVeigh doing in the Noble stand when his side was playing West Coast?
This is a game that from 99-2002 we woul definately have choked and lost. I never thought we would lose it last night. You don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby ZieglerComment

I just watched the last quarter again. Kirk got us home. The Tiger looked in agony when he stopped in front of me late in the game and he and Williams are our top gear run to the finish line - please don't have him out again.
And when do we get Schauble back - we NEED him directing our defence?Comment

The cats played well up until 3qrt time. They had a match plan and used it well right up the last term.
Also if cressa had not been part of the cats coaching stuff, they would not have gone at us like they did.
I am dirty btw that cressa was not given a role at the swans this year. The logic of letting one of our best clubman go to an oppositional club was pathetic.Last edited by Diego; 11 April 2004, 12:10 PM.Comment
