    Re: Membership ladder

Adelaide 45,774 - What else is there to do in Adelaide

West Coast 40,086 - What else is there to do in Perth ?

Collingwood 38,780 - Watch this plummet next year

Essendon 36,105 - Yeah but when 30,000 are kids it doesn't translate to much $

Port Adelaide 35,000 - What else is there to do in Adelaide when the Crows aren't playing ?

Fremantle 30,259 - What else is there to do in Perth when the Eagles aren't playing ?

Carlton 30,112 - Watch this plunge if the gangland murders continue and members keep killing each other.

Hawthorn 29,212 - class action for breach of promise of premiership

Brisbane Lions 28,343 - this is all they can do from 3 premierships -pffft

St Kilda 26,500 - probably at their max

Richmond 26,211 - this bunch would make a great case study for someone doing a pyschology degree

Sydney 24,000 - not bad. well up on last year. Not near that 30,000 heights of 1998/99, but more of a loyal core base now

Melbourne 22,184 - hard times ahead

Kangaroos 21,209 - hard times ahead

Geelong 21,074 - hard times ahead

Bulldogs 16,309 - hard times ahead

Probably best to compare us to the Lions at this stage.

In that aspect we are doing pretty well considering they have 3 flags.

What was out total last year?

Bart - big stretch to try and portray 24,000 as a satisfactory result.

Agree - especially coming off a big year which saw 71000 at our last match.

Final figures aren't in yet guys.

And the impact of 70 odd thousand people at the big games was made quite clear at the end of last season as to our 'profit' turnaround

The final figure will go up when people realise they won't get grand final tickets if they don't join

I agree the impact was big on the bottom line last year - but it means nothing unless sustained in some fashion.

Guys, Sydney is completely different to Melbourne. There is no culture of season passes here. You see the Waratahs pack in 40000 each week, but only a small fraction are season passes. In fact I bet our season pass numbers are more than all Sydney NRL clubs combined.

I'm not sure what the 2003 number was, but I remember it been close to 20,000 which was rock bottom. Remember in the 3 prvious seasons, the Swans played 1 finals match (...a losing one...away)

The 1998/99 numbers were so high because it was seen as the in-thing. Once again many of you have no understanding of what it is like here. South Sydney had reportedly 60,000 people march on Town Hall to get them back in the comp, had a full house for their first game back, and now struggle to get 10,000. Northern Spirirt like Perth Glory played in front of full houses at NSO. They no longer exist, Perth are the flagbearers. In the past 8 years, 7 NSW NRL teams either merged or were kicked out. The Waratahs went bust and were rescued by the ARU. Sydney Kings went bust.

You will probably see solid but not spectacular increases from now on.

SCG crowds last year weren't great. The big increases were in the West, among people who aren't going to fork out for a membership.

                The figures are solid.

If it doesn't, we have had a fair few members AWOL week 1 and 2 at the SCG!

Then this is even worse. At best, there has been zero growth as yet from a preliminary final year.

However, I was under the impression that Melbourne membership was growing a bit... not to the point they were a few years ago (only more matches can achieve this...listening MBH? Listening Andy D?) but at least better than last year's 4,000.

Brisbane have replaced us as biggest interstate side in Melbourne. That is an indictment on AFL policy towards the issue.

No. Its because they have won the last 3 premierships.

                            That's why they've increased. They're at 7,000 or thereabouts.

We were 6,000 in about 2000 - and we hadn't won 3 premierships in a row.

So why have they increased, but we've DECREASED?

Could it be because we're playing in Canberra so the 'Roos can pretend they get crowds there, instead of in Melbourne, doing something for OUR members?

That was a Kangaroos home game played at Manuka and had nothing to do with the Swans. Good luck to the Kangas if they get a good crowd there.

The real answer would lie in the fact that the AFL continues to schedule two matches every year between Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond and Carlton. Clearly in the case of Richmond and Carlton they have lost the right to "blockbusters" in Melbourne based on their abysmal records in recent seasons.

Even their own fans aren't turning up to watch the crap they are throwing up.

However, its these games that are seeing the Swans locked out of Melbourne - and why we only ever play those "big" Victorian teams once every year.
