That's me too. My grandfather lived in South Melbourne and so he and my father followed the Swans and then so did I (really jumping on in the late '80s). Three generations (well, four with my son) and no premiership! That's dedication!

The amount paid to the home team on the attendance by each away team member has been previously published so it is not a secret. It is only a token amount IIRC. Just a few dollars. A non members admittance fee goes to the home club although the AFL has some complicated equalistion plans and levies. It is certainly very important for a supporter to buy a membership if the supporter wants his/her club to be the main beneficiary.

5000 members at $100 = $500,000.
10000 members at $100 = $1 million

More Melbourne games means a higher priced membership ticket = more money for the club.

What? I thought people in Melbourne wanted more, not less. I know that, as of now, Morwood hasn't done what most of us want done (more Melbourne games), but taking away the Melbourne office would be a step backwards wouldn't it? The impression that I got from the article was that maybe the club is willing to lose money now if that meant growing Melbourne's membership and making money later.

If the club was to get 10 000 Melbourne members, I would say that it'd be almost a neccesity to have an office there.

I think Gunn is refering to a physical office. i.e. Still have a fulltime rep in Melbourne without the costs of a rented office and extra staff when many of these tasks could be managed from Sydney.

Absolutely correct. I have phoned the Melbourne ofice a couple of times and emailed them too. The rep could just have well have been in Sydney.

Why would anyone need to visit the Melbourne office other than to try on and maybe buy a swans shirt or beany etc. Sales figures just don't warrant maintaining a shop front. Some may want to buy memberships rather than do it by mail. These memberships could be sold by from a stall outside the ground as most clubs have do.

What else would a rented fully staffed Melbourne office be useful for? I suppose it could have cosmetic reasons. It looks like the club cares and is doing something. Ask Swans supporters in Melbourne if they would prefer an office (that few go to) or additional home games.

I can understand where you are coming from (more Melbourne games will attract members not an office) but it is part of the whole committment to have a social club/office down here to support the membership.

Brisbane get up to 1,500 members everytime they play on TV at the Manningham club (their base in Melbourne) which through raffles, merchandise sales and bar takings go towards the club. We are now trying to replicate this structure by having an office/social club that Swans members can go and watch the games on TV with other members.

As for other people suggestions about Tony Moorwood not delivering on promises of more Melbourne games hold your horses!!!!!!!!!

He was appointed after the draw was announced so had no influence over this years recommendations from the club to the AFL about games in Melbourne.

I have had correspondence with him on this issue and from what has been implied we will not be renewing the Bulldogs game and that extra game will be returned to Melbourne leaving us with 6 games next year.

Before we can get stuck into him we need to wait and see what the outcome will be.

Interesting. It is also interesting that none of those plans seem to be articulated by the club. I would also be interested in the economics of such a venture. I expect it would lose heaps. The membership needs support by playing extra games down here not by going to a venue to watch it on TV.

My opinion on Tony Morwood (whome I have met and like) is coloured by what he said at the first family day at the Lake oval this year where he was not supportive of requests more games in Melbourne. My thoughts then were that this guy will have to sell a lot more memberships just to pay his salary...and for what. Tony has certainly never promised more Melbourne games as you suggest.

I sure hope the Footscray game returns here but I don't think Tony will have had a lot to do with it if it does.

Why does he need to imply anything to you about the Bulldogs game next year. If it is returning then why can't the club just come out and say so. That would be encouraging. The implication is just as likely to be that it will return if the club can't negotiate better terms for it to remain in Sydney or that the Bulldogs don't want to sell it next year. Maybe the club is awaiting a better offer. Who knows? Certainly not us. It seems to me that if they want to play another game in Melbourne then all they have to do is come out and say they will not buy next years Bulldogs home game even if it is for sale. End of story.

I am hopeful for another game but I really don't think Tony will deserve credit for it.
