Seven, TV Rights and the Swans

Now it appears 7 will make a big play on the next round of TV rights.

The crucial piece of this article is

Seven's big "in" with the AFL in the next round of negotiations may be the Friday night timeslot.

Unlike Nine with rugby league, it does not have commitments outside Melbourne and may contemplate taking a low-ratings hit in Sydney and Brisbane in order to secure guaranteed ratings success in this state.

If this happens, there could be a number of good outcomes. Firstly, Seven to take a hit on Saurday nights and show Swans live into the Sydney market. Secondly, Sunday games revert to the favoured 2.10 start

    Please please please!!

Would love 7 to get the rights back - even if they share it with 10.

    So over Channel Eddie.

I usually watch the Friday night game at 11.15pm drunk as a skunk and then have to read the papers next day to find out who won.
If 7 show it at 8.30 that will throw out my routine.
I will miss Eddie's commentary on Collingwood games.

This will have no relevance to the 2.10pm start on Sunday as channel 7 wanted to show double headers on Sundays into Melbourne when it had the rights, but the AFL would not let them.

This time around since the fixture has been changed to accomodate channel 9, channel 7 will be able to come straight in (if they win the rights) and run with the 1.10pm double header starts.

WHat they would be able to do though (and no Melbourne people have a go at me ok lol, just a theory!!) is have the swans at 2.10, and show it live to only the Northern states, and still have a double header for Melbourne viewers and perhaps have us as the 2nd game for the southern viewers, or even just on pay tele.

Seven will not be restricted in the Northern States by Rugby League.

              I detest Channel 9.
I hate their coverage and most of their commentators.
Still peeved about their sudden end to the Bombers game 4 weeks ago (?) with 5 mins to go.

I do like Channel 10. Though bring back After The Game (or Before The Game.. whatever it is called) on Saturday nights!!!!

Hope Channel 7 and 10 share rights... that would be grand!

Live into Melbourne, like they used to do would be excellent.

But we sould have to go back to "ssppeciaallll" from Brucey.

I know he is almost the Collingwood of commentating lol - but I LOVE HIM! he is the best, I love replays of close games the swans won and he commentated, not sure any of the commentators out there at the moment capture the true emotion of a game as well as he does.

Tim Lane did on radio , but I haven't really seen the same passion on 10 from him though.

I reckon get the little guys Bruce and Huddo together, I just love 'em. I'd love if 7 got the rights back, even though I do like 10's use of The Holy Grail... footy is for channel 7, end of story.

If 7 comes in for 9, and 10 and foxtel stay the same, there will be enoumous pressure to have Sydney play Friday night and Saturday night football. Ditto for Brisbane.

Enough pressure I would assume, to make the AFL relocate another "local" team into Sydney and Brisbane. Its the only way they could get prime time games to rate in those cities.

I'm with you Damien I love Bruce too. I can sit through 'special' a hundred and one times, at least he's not using prodigious in every second sentence. That drives me nuts.

I can't see any outcome that would see 7 show Friday night AFL at 8.30 in Sydney or Brisbane. It would be commercial suicide.

Even if the Swans were involved, 7 would get smashed by the league on 9 and not have any chance of winning the ratings for the week.

                            Fantasy land stuff.

My understanding is that 7 are getting smashed on Friday nights in any case.

They may be able to do a few games a year, like big games, plus any swans games.

I am sure they could work something out. The money they make out of the southern states from AFL is huge from all reports, so to lose out a couple times a year in the northern states is probably worth it from a national network perspective.
