Problem is - why is most of it bad! Since I have followed the Swans we have won only 40% of our games, which equate into a season of 9-13. Mediocrity is the catchcry of the Swans and I really would like that to change. I thought it had finally changed, but doesn't appear so now.
My head says we dont have a hope of being a part of the September action - but my heart says otherwise!
Although I started this post, I am still unsure. As I just noted above, the current competition is quite weak. If we can regain last year's form we can still be a major part, hence I can't see any reason to tank games. However, my big worry is I have been excited about seasons too many times before ('78, '88, '97, '03) only to be let down, so thinking we can turn it around goes against instinct and years of ingrained mediocre performances. We are still missing some key stars and under pressure we are found out. Can we change that?

          Thanks for your input!!

If you had logged onto the Richmond website you'd see a winning team after the weekend, not one that had just lost to one of the 3 weakest teams in the competition while playing at home!!

I would have thought you were intelligent enough to read the inference to the whinging, truckloads of manure and spitting FFS.

            I obviously was wrong.

Most of it wasn't whinging, just disappointment over the poor performance. One idiot made a comment about spitting like Richmond.

Gives me the @@@@s how some people think we are not allowed to get on here and complain after a crap effort like that.

Errr... I don't think so!! I don't care if it "costs" us in terms of priority picks, I want to see a team out there each week trying their hardest to win games. If we start tanking games, that's when a lot of us will give up too.

You work your standard 40 hours (or whatever, amend as necessary) a week, and you get paid. For that payment, your employers expect you to perform to standard. It's quite simple.

The players need to be held accountable, if praise is due, pay it. If sprays are due, pay them too.
                    Good comments Des.
I think the thing that gauled me the most was the fact that for at least 10 minutes we were under a goal down. But never during that time did you get the impression that the Swans were either going to get the ball and do something constructive with it, let alone kick a match-changing goal. In this crucial period it seemed like the Tiges had 3-5 extra players on the field. That is what hurt the most.

I was so upset by the effort of the players because I had sacrificed 6 hours of my time on a perfectly beautiful Saturday to go and help make not one banner but THREE. It took forever and tempers were getting frayed because of it all.

And what do I get as a thank you, a pathetic effort like that!

After the match I was doubting my sanity as to why I was shelling out my hard-earned to go to Perth next week.

However I remain vigilant. It is time to stand up and show that you are a Swans supporter who will follow his/her team through thick and thin, rain or shine.

                    JF

Why is it that in Melbourne you get people busting themselves to help do things, whereas things in Sydney are always left to one or 2 individuals who are generally stressed out of their minds.

That is an intrensically Sydney/Rugby league thing. It is not in our culture to so commitment and concern about not just a football team, but anything or anyone. If you lose, you get out and try and forget you were ever there. Hence the ones who remain have this"We'll be there boys. You tried your best" kind of crawliness. Very alien so people brought up on the Melbourne footy culture, but something we just can't seem to kick up here.

I used to dish it out to the Raiders when they weren't putting in. Everyone was absolutely horrified that I was be so 'disloyal'. One guy nearly belted me. The same people often left matches with 20 to go when we were losing. And came up wuth excuses sucxh as "Well, I have a long trip home."

I find it highly disconcerting that fans will consider leaving early as a way to prove a point. We are all club members. We have a right to pass comment on your team. That means straying until then end, even when it hurts to do so.

I hardly think we were let down in 2003. We lost in a Prelim to the three time premiership team that, incidentally, is favourite to win yet again this year.

There is no point dwelling on past ordinary seasons and nor can we expect the club to change the list overnight. When Roos took over he said that he didn't think he had the list to be a challenger and we should expect inconsistency. Then last year happened and no we don't know what to think.

When the club starts to trade for/draft Ryan O'Connors, Scott Russells etc, that's when to get worried. Otherwise there is little that can be done but take the draft picks that are available and hope that the stars eventually emerge.

Interesting point Jules. I won't leave a game early (in fact for the game on the weekend, I stayed to the end, but I was off my seat and fairly halfway to the carpark before the end of the Richmond song. I don't think it's "disloyal" to criticise the team - it is the CLUB we have the loyalty to, not the players. When we see performances like that, we vent steam at the players and the performances because we are loyal to the club.

That's why I don't have any "favourite players". I don't care how good you are, if you are traded to another club, the next time I see you on the field, you are just another opposition player, playing MY CLUB.

If the players bled for the club as much as the supporters did... we wouldn't have as many problems as we do. That's why we're so fond of the so-call "clubmen".

Yeah, this was discussed at length with a good friend of mine today that is a lifelong and over the top dedicated Wests Tigers fan (balmain) - you want them to love the jumper as much as you do.

I guess in the AFL it is in a way a product of the draft, it is not often we have life long supporters playing for us.

I just want to see them hurting as much as me when we lose and like Cressa last year, point to the jumper when we win and show how much it means...you want to feel it means more than a nice big salary.

Sunday's game was the first time I've left before the end, and I don't regret doing it one bit. I'm not going to waste my time for a team who didn't seem to care enough to put it all on the line for the club.

I wasn't doing it to prove a point. I don't think they players would really give a @@@@ whether I stayed or left.

I love this footy club as much as anyone, and will support them to the death, but that does not mean supporting half-efforts. It's not about winning games, it's about the effort behind it. It's not about this culture difference that you always refer to between Melbourne and Sydney, it's about me being pretty disgusted with the efforts I saw yesterday.

You hear it so often but the reality is many people would love the opportunity that those guys have been given - there are young kids playing Aussie Rules all over Sydney that would do anything to play for the Bloods. Just like Cressa did to the very end last year. If the guys out there don't care, well then p*ss off and give me some players who will.
