    ENOUGH of the morbidity!

I have decided to wait a full day before really getting stucking into discussions about yesterday and what went wrong. I'm hurting, and badly too, despite last night at least being pleasant enough. Was very grouchy at work, and am still kinda frustrated and stressed.

BUT enough is enough. It is in moments like this that we find out who are the serious supporters of the Sydney Swans Football Club and who are mere spectators. It is at times like this that we need to show our SUPPORT for the club. And show that despite the disappointment of yesterday and the past couple of weeks that we are COMMITTED to this club and have a sense of resolve to see this bad pack out.

All these people saying that the season is 100% over are seriously getting on my goat. How about showing a little faith in the team. Here are some reasons that I'm bashing around in my head as to why we can improve and WILL improve very very soon.

-We were absolutely abominable, yet ONLY lost by a couple of late goals yesterday. As shown against Geelong and in many matches last season, we have the ability to overcome poor starts, both in matches and in terms of the season.

-The weather can't get more worse than it has been over the last couple of match. I know we lost stupidly against Melbourne as well, but you have to be blind freddy to realise that bad weather means a very bad Sydney. Does this we are instantly a terrible football team, hell no!!!!

-Matthew Richardson was in rare rare form. The normal whining wussbag of a full forward was obviously jumping out of his skin to play. And it showed in his greater enthusiasm. Bolton, who had played well on him in the past was given a bath. But once James was moved onto him, he did OK.

Indeed I remarked that we would lose when I looked at how easily the Tiges were kicking goals during the pre-game. That as well as how firmly the team runs through the players are always pre-match barometers of how well I think a team are on the game on the day. There was little yelling, little geeing up in the Swans group as they went through the banner.

We have injuries to key personal all over the ground. Not only are the goalsneaks we had for a miracle goal last year not around (O'Laughlin, Davis, Schneider), but we are badly badly missing Schaubs at CHB. I spoke to the latter when waiting for Peter to come back the flags up to take to Perth. He said it would be another 2-3 weeks yet before he was back and ready to play. With him back I don't think the height issue that faced us yesterday with big Ottens, Richo and Stafford will be the problem it is at present.

Yes, Cresswell's miss is quite evident. But it is in the midfield where we most have to pick up up game. It was highly frustrating to see how many Tigers were lose and free of their men in the last 5 minutes. It seemed like ages that we were only down by 5 points, yet you sensed this feeling of everyone being resigned to the fact that we wouldn't get up. 5 frigging points, one kick and we win!

As has been said at great length on this forum, Sydney's game is a very high risk affair. When it comes off we are worldbeaters. When it doesn't, we look the worst team in the league. Sure, our game is to string 4-10 kick handpasses to get the ball quicklky out of defense. In the conditions we have had over the last few weeks, that simply hasn't been possibly. Yes, there truly seems to be a lack of plan B. But that that mean that if we get a dry track that we are suddenly hopeles incompetant skillless footballers who have no hope of winning, oh course it bloody well isn't!

If ever a team can snap itself out of a drop in form it is us. Just remember the Melbourne match last year and the Lions away match at the Gabba. We were down and out, yet started stringing a few of our handpasses together out of defence, and bob's your uncle, 4 to 5 goals appear in no time. Even last week after 3 quarters of nothing, they managed to bang on 7 goasls in the last quarter. And that in a supposed form slump! Conversely it has to be said, teams seem to be flooding in the 3rd quarter of matches against us, thus stopping our running game completely before we can get it back together again in the last quarter. This is of great concern. Again, Roosey has to find a plan B. Whether he has it remains to be seen.

Playing youngsters like Powell and Noggie for 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there will do nothing to improve them as players. Both have raw ability but need to be given a lot of time to get their teeth into things. Furthermore LRT is wasted in the ACTAFL. We could have badly done with his height in defence yesterday. Monty, well I just don't think he is up to it skillswise to play AFL football. And Jude has plenty of improvement in him as well.

In summation, we ARE very very capable of quite dramatic improvement. And are more than capable of stringing it together against the Eagles, who appear to be in even worse shape than us at the moment. But it has to come from our engine room. Williams has to start running into the forward line. Tadgh has to stop running around waving his arms about madly, but doing very little. We miss his forays into the forward line. Sadly I have to say this, but when the conditions are wet and he can't handball, he is pretty much a liability in our side.

It up to YOU, supporters of the Swans. We can all start moaning and groaning about having a club with a losing culture and a team with no heart. Or we can show SUPPORT for the players and club in this bad patch. And have a bit of faith that we have a team who can improve, and will improve.

We saw what we are capable against the Lions and North. We are more than capable of beating the Eagles in Perth.

Have a little faith, peoples? You might be surprised how quickly things can change around.

I'm in. Are all of you lot?

    I'm definitely with you Julian.

One thing that might be in the team's favour is that no-one will give them a chance of winning next week. Even if we were in form and notwithstanding the Eagles' ordinary start to the year, they would be expected to win over in Perth. Maybe it's an opportunity for the team to just go over there without the fear of losing and remember what it's like to have some fun out on the footy paddock. Could be just what the doctor ordered.

the last time we were 3-4 was last year, right between beating both of 2002's grand-finalists. our current form isn't red-hot, but we can win the next two and set ourselves up for a fight against the saints, who'll have to get tired sometime.

      i'm in.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

Last year we were actually 4-3, having just defeated the Lions following Collingwood the previous week. A fair bit of difference!!

We were 3-4 in 2002 and 2001 and 2000 and 1999 and 1997 and 1992 and 1991 and 1985 and 1981 and 1979, and none of those years were particularly great!! The same old pattern makes the frustration hardly surprising!!

Be thankful there is so much passion running high on the forum at the moment.

I don't think i have seen fans as livid and dirty as we are all feeling atm. Even conservative posters are digging in which is showing that the RED blood is surely pumping with passion atm.

Anyway we have been in worst positions than we currently are. I suppose most of us have held high expectations after 2003 and expectations most times can hurt you the most.

          Nice post Jules.

my thoughts too when I read this.

It just takes one of our most loyal and passionate to speak up and the tide of emotion is changing. I hope the same thing is happening at the club with our boys.

Well Luckily for us in Melb, we get atleast a fortnight's rest as the game is only on foxtel, So bring on the Hawks game.

PS. Not only was it a upsetting to lose on Sunday, I had the wife angry as well for making her stay home on Mothers Day, so I could watch the football. Women!! (sorry ladies)

Maybe I should have taken her out!!!

I'd agree with just about all of your post Jules, I really do think that we still have a chance and I'll be at every game I can get to regardless of the week before's score and bad play.

BUT! The weather can get worse! Have you ever seen real Melbourne footy weather, we still have to play at Optus Oval, and I've seen some horrendous weather there in the past, and then there's Geelong weather .....

We really are spoilt by the nice Sydney weather, and really need to get out and learn how to handle slippery conditions.

(not that I am saying the weather is the cause of our problems)

                      I agree whole heartedly!!

AT the game I was so angry and even abusive towards the players...apparently if i yell out "kick it long" they can hear me. I felt sorry for the kid near me when towards the end of the game looked at his mum and said, dont worry - we're going to kick the next 15 goals! I wish!!

Even after the game I was so angry that i was wishing that Roosy was in the changerooms blasting them and giving them all an earful. But wait, he's done this before and nothing came of it. I'm no psychologist but maybe we need to take a different approach. I dont know..... but what i DO know is that some of the boys really need to have a serious talking to and pull themselves together.

I think what disappointed me the most at the game (amongst a million other things) was the attitude some of our boys showed. Hands on hips, shoulders slouched and heads down. Now i can deal with a loss but i can't deal with seeing my team not putting in the hard yards all the way through the game. I believe that if we showed a bit more heart and some accountability we could find some of the form that we showed last year. I absolutely love watching players like Monty and Bevo - sure they are still young and make some silly mistakes, but the difference is that they just shrug it off and try and redeem themselves, rather than put their hands on their hips and shake their heads. I think some of the older players should take note....

Enough of the bad points because even though i was devastated on the weekend and still am very upset, im not ready or willing to give up. I absolutely love the team and will stand by them no matter what. It really is times like these that all the supporters need to stay true and loyal to the Swans and get behind them. They still give me goosebumps when they string together some great plays and show some of the courage and determination that i know they possess. I think maybe the boys need to be shown some of the matches from last year esp. vs Port in the Finals.....Need i say more.

So i do apologise for rattling on but i did have to get those things off my chest and maybe some of the other people on here have been doing just that. But at the end of the day i hope that you are all able to see past the current "speedhumps" and look ahead to the future because you all know that we have a great team who need us to back them up.

So yes Jules, im in too!! hahahaha

I think some of the sentiments people have been expressing are understandable considering it was Richmond we lost to.

Agree that we were "absolutely abominable" but even if we were abominable we would have scraped an ugly win and got the four points.

The fact that Richmond have been so bad this season, and to be honest they were pretty aweful against us as well, shows just where Sydney is at the moment.

It doesn't mean supporters are abandoning the club, just concerned to see a promising and exciting season slip away.

Of most concern is that the club should've seen Sunday's loss coming - the signs had been evident for about a month now.

As a preliminary final side, wet weather, a couple of injuries and retirements should be something we can overcome.

The true test of character for the team now is how they pull themselves out of this hole.

My advice would be: look at what Barry Hall is doing and follow.
"As everyone knows our style of football is defensive and unattractive, and as such I have completely forgotten how to mark or kick over the years" - Brett Kirk
