I have decided to wait a full day before really getting stucking into discussions about yesterday and what went wrong. I'm hurting, and badly too, despite last night at least being pleasant enough. Was very grouchy at work, and am still kinda frustrated and stressed.
BUT enough is enough. It is in moments like this that we find out who are the serious supporters of the Sydney Swans Football Club and who are mere spectators. It is at times like this that we need to show our SUPPORT for the club. And show that despite the disappointment of yesterday and the past couple of weeks that we are COMMITTED to this club and have a sense of resolve to see this bad pack out.
All these people saying that the season is 100% over are seriously getting on my goat. How about showing a little faith in the team. Here are some reasons that I'm bashing around in my head as to why we can improve and WILL improve very very soon.
-We were absolutely abominable, yet ONLY lost by a couple of late goals yesterday. As shown against Geelong and in many matches last season, we have the ability to overcome poor starts, both in matches and in terms of the season.
-The weather can't get more worse than it has been over the last couple of match. I know we lost stupidly against Melbourne as well, but you have to be blind freddy to realise that bad weather means a very bad Sydney. Does this we are instantly a terrible football team, hell no!!!!
-Matthew Richardson was in rare rare form. The normal whining wussbag of a full forward was obviously jumping out of his skin to play. And it showed in his greater enthusiasm. Bolton, who had played well on him in the past was given a bath. But once James was moved onto him, he did OK.
Indeed I remarked that we would lose when I looked at how easily the Tiges were kicking goals during the pre-game. That as well as how firmly the team runs through the players are always pre-match barometers of how well I think a team are on the game on the day. There was little yelling, little geeing up in the Swans group as they went through the banner.
We have injuries to key personal all over the ground. Not only are the goalsneaks we had for a miracle goal last year not around (O'Laughlin, Davis, Schneider), but we are badly badly missing Schaubs at CHB. I spoke to the latter when waiting for Peter to come back the flags up to take to Perth. He said it would be another 2-3 weeks yet before he was back and ready to play. With him back I don't think the height issue that faced us yesterday with big Ottens, Richo and Stafford will be the problem it is at present.
Yes, Cresswell's miss is quite evident. But it is in the midfield where we most have to pick up up game. It was highly frustrating to see how many Tigers were lose and free of their men in the last 5 minutes. It seemed like ages that we were only down by 5 points, yet you sensed this feeling of everyone being resigned to the fact that we wouldn't get up. 5 frigging points, one kick and we win!
As has been said at great length on this forum, Sydney's game is a very high risk affair. When it comes off we are worldbeaters. When it doesn't, we look the worst team in the league. Sure, our game is to string 4-10 kick handpasses to get the ball quicklky out of defense. In the conditions we have had over the last few weeks, that simply hasn't been possibly. Yes, there truly seems to be a lack of plan B. But that that mean that if we get a dry track that we are suddenly hopeles incompetant skillless footballers who have no hope of winning, oh course it bloody well isn't!
If ever a team can snap itself out of a drop in form it is us. Just remember the Melbourne match last year and the Lions away match at the Gabba. We were down and out, yet started stringing a few of our handpasses together out of defence, and bob's your uncle, 4 to 5 goals appear in no time. Even last week after 3 quarters of nothing, they managed to bang on 7 goasls in the last quarter. And that in a supposed form slump! Conversely it has to be said, teams seem to be flooding in the 3rd quarter of matches against us, thus stopping our running game completely before we can get it back together again in the last quarter. This is of great concern. Again, Roosey has to find a plan B. Whether he has it remains to be seen.
Playing youngsters like Powell and Noggie for 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there will do nothing to improve them as players. Both have raw ability but need to be given a lot of time to get their teeth into things. Furthermore LRT is wasted in the ACTAFL. We could have badly done with his height in defence yesterday. Monty, well I just don't think he is up to it skillswise to play AFL football. And Jude has plenty of improvement in him as well.
In summation, we ARE very very capable of quite dramatic improvement. And are more than capable of stringing it together against the Eagles, who appear to be in even worse shape than us at the moment. But it has to come from our engine room. Williams has to start running into the forward line. Tadgh has to stop running around waving his arms about madly, but doing very little. We miss his forays into the forward line. Sadly I have to say this, but when the conditions are wet and he can't handball, he is pretty much a liability in our side.
It up to YOU, supporters of the Swans. We can all start moaning and groaning about having a club with a losing culture and a team with no heart. Or we can show SUPPORT for the players and club in this bad patch. And have a bit of faith that we have a team who can improve, and will improve.
We saw what we are capable against the Lions and North. We are more than capable of beating the Eagles in Perth.
Have a little faith, peoples? You might be surprised how quickly things can change around.
I'm in. Are all of you lot?
