Another smokescreen from Roos

Roos' latest diversion (after umpires and Goodes) is that we don't have anyone to take on the monster forwards such as Richo and this is a reason for the loss.

I think Heath has done a very good job and NO-ONE could have stopped Richo on the weekend given the way the ball was delivered. I would say the same against Neitz.

From where I saw it, we were hurt on our short-chip style turnovers where Richmond were able to make fast breaks. This allowed the Tigers to often kick to Richo under little pressure and hence they gave him excellent service. Heath was usually a couple of metres behind (what else can you do??).

If Heath was 2 metres behind, Schaubs would have been..... 5-10 metres behind! Plus Richo kicked very accurately for once. I don't see how Schauble could have helped.

Happy to hear others' views on how Schauble could have prevented a loss.

I'm on a Roos-watch. He is currently reminding me of the way Eade used to blame individual players such as Goodes and Stafford, and yet never publically accept his share of the blame. He has never been under heavy pressure before as a coach and it will be interesting to see how he handles himself. I certainly saw a different Paul Roos at 3/4 time this week. Is his honeymoon over?

This one I tend to agree with. We don't have a big, boofy full back who can outmuscle a decent sized full forward or at least punch them firmly in the back of the head . I don't see how Schauble could have helped either. I think this is a missing component of our team and it is up to Roos to work a system to combat it (apparently his plan has been to ignore it).

With Richo, somebody should have been niggling him, Tilt style. He loses the plot easily under pressure.

I think Roos is full of crap on this one.

Sure Richo was responsible for 8 goals, but the rest of the team only managed 2 between them. If we had been more effective than kicking just 3 goals after quarter time then we would have won.

Neitz might have kicked a lot of goals against us too, but that is hardly the reason we lost.

Lloyd didn't destroy, yet we lost that one as well.

Brisbane didn't have a large forward, but they beat us too.

So what other excuses can be trotted out. How about just accepting the fact we played like @@@@ and we need to try much harder.

Mmm... I think I've posted elsewhere that there simply seems to be no trust in Heath. He's only been beaten once this year; Neitz. I reckon in the three quarters he had Richo, giving away 3 goals was a break-even considering the share of supply Richo was getting. Had wins in the Brisbane, Freo, Geelong and Kangaroos games.

And yet he was not put on Lloyd, and was only second choice against Richardson? Why?

The worst thing is that he really doesn't know what is going wrong.

Our skills have virtually evaporated and he admits players aren't putting in.

Heath has played well. And can only get better as he gets more match time. We were happy with B2 last year. Tadhg and Leo got heaps of accolades. We haven't really changed much down there, just missing Schaubs.

I don't know that the team is much different to the team that we thought were heros in Adelaide late last year.

IMHO it's self-belief. For some reason they've lost it. It's not that they're not trying, they just don't think they'll get there, so they don't. I wonder what has changed.

One aspect that puzzled was the lack of support for Heath or Craig Bolton when matched up against Richo. Most teams use a tall to help out in the marking contests or a player coming across to spoil the leads. I know the latter can be difficult to accomplish but mostly we saw our player one on one against Richo. In that situation a player of Richo's size and speed will usually win the contest. Richmond used Ottens to block off supply to our forward line very effectively..

I think Heath is standing tall and has every right to hold his head high. He's doing a great job and he just keeps amazing me. He will only get better as time passes. When you think about who he's minded this year and really he's still a babe when it comes to his career, a little faith goes a long, long way. Have some in Heath.

Maybe they thought he would be underdone, coming back from injury. I said in another post they didn't seem to pay him much respect. You would have thought after 4 1st qtr goals, he needed closer attention from all not just James.

Keep it cool guys. Paul Roos hasn't turned into Mr Hyde (or Dr Jekyl - I always get them mixed up) over night. Seriously, 3 weeks ago he was the great bloke, clever tactician, brilliant 356 game champion player he was at 3 qtr time during the Brissy prelim last year.

First up, he is trying to find answers beyond the problems he identified that occured in the last quarter that even Stu brought up. Players just thought better of Roosy's instructions and second guessed and paid the ultimate price.

Secondly, this did result is a hell of a lot of ball hammering into our defensive 50. If Dustin Fletcher was guarding the goal line, he might have thwarted 3 goals, enough to save the game. I think this is Roosy's point. I mean we allowed Port back into the contest at AAMI stadium didn't we? However we had bigger resources (Schaubes) to spoil just enough goals to protect the lead - important when you think about it.

Thirdly, yes we need some players to stand up at the moment. We need to find more from those that showed real form last year, Jude, Goodesy, Bally and we really need to free up our half back line again. Shaubles allowes the Leo, Tiger, B2 running game to happen.

Lastly, if Roosy wasn't trying to find these answers, I am sure threads like this would be wanting to hire the sniper that took Mick and Schneides out, just to hit Roosy's dodgey achilles again!

I think everyone is just blowing off some steam, someone has to get blamed and everyone is taking a shot at someone.

I'm on Bam Bam's side. Hands up those who don't think we could use a tall and strong defensive player. Heath and Craig are honest workers but they look silly alongside gorillas like Richo - wait for Gehrig to turn up!! (I hear he can bench press their combined weight).The trouble with Roos is that he's honest and open. That's not a smokescreen. Remember just a few weeks ago he was telling the losing teams that all was not lost for their season!

Would you prefer him to say "our players are crap and there's nothing to stop us plunging to wooden spoon status this year"? Yes, he now has a challenge on his hands, just as he did around this time last year. He has to find a way for the team to play with the confidence he instilled in them last year. Either he will or he won't but I'm betting he'll try his guts out. Give him a chance.

Or should we start looking for another coach? Spud outcoached us last weekend I hear and I've heard that he'll soon be looking for another job.

I agree with most of your view except on Schauble. I think we are a lot weaker without him. Yes, I know that we have won without him for most of this season, however, he adds solid physical and leading presence to our backline. He may not be the flashest FB, but adds depth and stability IMO.

I don't think James would be a viable FB due to his lack of size. C. Bolton IMO has not improved since last year.

Hey Dan. Do you remember our conversation a couple of weeks ago?

I do, though, agree with your sentiments, and also think it needs to be remembered that Roos has to give soundbites to the media to keep them quiet. Does anyone seriously think that this is the extent of his analysis or work to fix whatever it is that is going wrong at the moment.

There was a small article in Yesterdays HS, where Roos was saying we, if we can't find a large fullback type internally they will be recruiting one at the end of the season. Or words similar to that.
