SYDNEY is to have a new sporting fixture, with NSW Premier Bob Carr today announcing an annual pre-season showdown between Collingwood and Sydney Swans.
The game, the first of which will be held at Telstra Stadium on Saturday, June 26, will be the only AFL match played anywhere in Australia that weekend.
Speaking at the Sydney Cricket Ground and flanked by Collingwood president Eddie McGuire, Mr Carr said up to 80,000 fans are expected to attend the blockbuster.
"It will add to the tourist calender, get people here (and) build support for AFL," he said.
"All in all, (this will be) a very happy concentration of activity and events."
McGuire said he is delighted with the co-operation of the NSW government to entice so many football fans to Sydney.
"I think you'll see the black and white army hit Sydney ... and maybe some Sydneysiders will see what all the excitement about AFL is about," he said.
A range of events will be organised to complement the match, including coaching clinics, a Sydney Swans Gala Ball and an official Collingwood race day at Warwick Farm.'
