    Pies in annual SCG game

    Pies in annual SCG game
    May 13, 2004

SYDNEY is to have a new sporting fixture, with NSW Premier Bob Carr today announcing an annual pre-season showdown between Collingwood and Sydney Swans.

The game, the first of which will be held at Telstra Stadium on Saturday, June 26, will be the only AFL match played anywhere in Australia that weekend.

Speaking at the Sydney Cricket Ground and flanked by Collingwood president Eddie McGuire, Mr Carr said up to 80,000 fans are expected to attend the blockbuster.

"It will add to the tourist calender, get people here (and) build support for AFL," he said.

"All in all, (this will be) a very happy concentration of activity and events."

McGuire said he is delighted with the co-operation of the NSW government to entice so many football fans to Sydney.

"I think you'll see the black and white army hit Sydney ... and maybe some Sydneysiders will see what all the excitement about AFL is about," he said.

A range of events will be organised to complement the match, including coaching clinics, a Sydney Swans Gala Ball and an official Collingwood race day at Warwick Farm.'

I am confused...do they really mean preseason as a new fixure?

Or that each year we will be the only AFL match on the bye weekend?

Guess we will find out more in due course.

Can't see black and white army travelling for pre-season.

Does this mean the annual TS clash is not happening anymore?

I much prefer the SCG over TS... but I thought the point of having these BIG clashes was to have it at a venue that would accommodate the large crowds! I'm all for the games at SCG though.

I think you'll find they are confirming the annual Bye weekend will be solely the domain of Sydney-Collingwood from here on.

The word pre-season is an error IMO.

          Thank goodness for Eddie though

Yes my thoughts also, I was confused by the good reporting of Foxsports by saying pre season and SCG! but anyway...

            Yes thank god for Eddie...

Will he re-name Stade de Oz something like:
The Lexus, Emirates, Crazy Johns, This Space For Rent, Peter Daicos Stadium?

Having a TV that only Swans away games and wins, I wasn't aware of just how big Eddie had become. Now he is apparently big enough to flank Bob Carr on his own. Good grief.
Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way you'll be a mile away and he'll be shoeless.

They definately meant an annual clash at Telstra. Trying to become a rugby league style 'State Of Origin' affair.

Yes the great Sydney unwashed should be particularly excited about seeing the team that is going to get the first two draft picks this year.

Was thinking about this, and the problem it carries with it where Sydney and Collingwood both play clubs coming off a two week rest.

So here's the solution I came up with... why can't we play Collingwood twice in a row? Once at Stade Oz, the other at the MCG, the two games would be somewhat like a Test series. It would be fascinating to see how tactics change with the familiarity the two teams would have after say, six quarters against each other.

I think it'd be BIG in both states.

sounds good to me, people will complain though ,if one team is doing well ,that the draw is rigged, why should (insert team name here) have the revenue advantage of playing nationally televised games blah blah, then again, people will just complain i guess.
