I think what makes Jeff Wells a mark above most sports writers is that he is a writer who specialises in sport, rather than a retired sportman who has moved into writing. Some of his early, most lyrical sports writing was for the old National Times back in the early 1980s. Most of his fellow journos put him in the same category as John Huxley of the SMH (not sports) - a writer who can make every article worth reading.

For crying out loud .. Wells is a paid journo!

      It's the media!!

If his boss says "mate, you're being too soft on the swans .. give them a rev up" he says .. "yes boss".

      Simple.
Good men do good deeds. Evil men do evil deeds. But it takes religion for a good man to do evil deeds.

I am bewildered, Wells is by far the best writer I have ever read on footy (in the papers over the last 7 years). He is actually witty, insightful and his writing is elegant and readable.

Would you prefer Mike Sheahan or Caroline Wilson?

Walls and Brereton might know more about footy, but they can't write like a real writer!!!

          It takes all kinds.

BTW in all the Wells articles I have read I have agreed with nearly everything he has said footy-wise any way.

I'm confued as to what has upset people. He said that lots od players were crap on Saturday (for the 4th week in a row)...and that Sydney has serious problems that need addressing. Please explain why you feel the need to pour vitriol on him for saying this in a readable manner?

I agree. Wells style is very tounge in cheek. His columns aren't aimed at you or I but rather the great unwashed Sydney Tele readers. If its a style that gets people reading about the Swans and taking interest, then good. In fairness to him he is equally praiseworthy (although in his own style) when things are going well.

Yes I would prefer Sheahan, or Wilson. They are football writers, and agree or disagree with them, they at least spend all their time in Football.

I don't like Wells because yesterday was the Swans, today might be the Kings, tomorrow might be drugs in sport. I don't really care for general sports writers just waiting for the next popular thing to jump on or off or stick a knife in.

I am not upset by what he wrote, I just don't respect it.

Give me anyone who will write a simple sentence saying what they mean over Wells.

If that's Wilson or Brereton, so be it.

No idea why you find it weird though sharp9, why on earth would I have to have respect for Wells?

                      Thankyou RWO!
Correct about " Donkey " Doyle - get rid of him ASAP.

As for Schauble, I am not too sure if you are taking the piss or not ! A footy scribe from Melbourne the other day commented that Schauble has had 110 goals kicked on him in the time he has been at the club ( 4 season not including this year ) - and only 26 goals were kicked on him last year. Great effort in my book and missed in the backline at present like Essendon will be when Sheedy retires.

I didn't think 27 is too old and if you want to be quick, Athens Olympics is the go. Schauble never leaves his man, always keeping pace, and the only time he leaves his man is when he is covering for Jason Saddington.
Well somebody told me, You had a boyfriend, Who looks like a girlfriend,That I had in February of last year, It's not confidential, I've got potential

If you want someone better, try Patrick Smith.

Now there's someone who is very much a good stirrer but with few verbal skills. But at The Oz that qualifies you as an intellectual (a la Emma Tom).

Because he writes well and has insightful things to say.

I took your tone to mean that you wouldn't regard ANYTHING he said of being worthy of your reading (even if you agreed with him) just because he doesn't spend a life in football.

                              I find that weird.

I enjoy reading Patrick Smith but I can't say I think he is as good a wordsmith as Jeff Wells.

Smith always has interesting opinions and is always good value even when you disagree with him..

Fair enough, Charlie. I'm surprised that that's your preference though, given your fondness for penning long sentences of your own.
