Round 8
OPTUS Game Review Round 8 vs West Coast
OK...
You've got three options....
You can:
1. Put on your preferred CD of the moment that has an unfortunate scratch on your favourite track. Play it and just let it stick on the same line that repeats...almost annoyingly...actually definitely annoyingly
Or
2. Pull out the OPTUS Game Reviews that I have written for the past three weeks and just read them again
Or
3. Help me to come up with an interesting topic to discuss this week other than losing football. I like to think of myself as a pretty flexible guy so am willing to take on board most suggestions...let's see...how about why it is so damn hard to learn to speak another language, or, why is fashion cyclical, when will the techno, computerized, predictable beats and lyrics of 80's music be trendy again or we could go for something on a global scale like solutions for world conflict and hunger?
I suppose I should mention something about our trip across the Nullarbor. Please forgive me if my recollections become a bit blurred as I was knocked out and given a free ticket to 'Ga-Ga-Land' some time in the third quarter. I was told that we did come within eight points but then just when we seemed to be picking up speed and momentum, the path to win the game became all 'uphill'...so I am told.
Football can be a funny and fickle career. There are times when you can be running red hot and everyone wants to know everything about you from how old you were when you picked up your first footy to really meaningful stuff like what your favourite appliance is in the kitchen or if you wear boxers or briefs. But just as quick as it comes it can go again, straight out the door, or the window, and there is not a whole lot you can do to get it back. Unless there is a small opportunity and that opportunity is pretty much 'do-or-die' so to speak. Your chance to get your dream career back or there's the infamous thanks for your time, we'll call you don't you call us.
When you think of footy in this way, milestones like what Nicksy (Mathew Nicks), Fozzi (Nick Fosdike) and Davo (Nick Davis) should not go by without a mention and some well deserved praise. For an AFL player to accumulate 100 games is a huge achievement. I'm not sure of the exact figure but only around 5% of players that get drafted to a club actually achieve the big 'one zero zero'. Coming from someone who was not given their career on a silver platter I think it's a bloody good effort to play one game. That's all I ever wanted to do.
As in business or life once you realize your goal or dream you strive higher and keep trying to raise the bar. Both Fozzi and Davo raised the bat this week to acknowledge their century. Foz came to club in 1999 as a highly talented midfielder, he was secured early in the draft with big wraps. Growing up in South Australia Foz played all his footy with Norwood a club with great history. When he wasn't playing with his home club the 'red legs' he was representing his state in his age group in both AFL and athletics (1500m). This has set Foz up to become a celebrated player with the Swans and I'm sure he will have a long and illustrious career with our proud club.
Now Davo on the other hand has only played 25% of his games at the Swans but he has always been a home grown talent. Davo grew up in Sydney and spent most of his time down in The Shire (which he refers to as "Gods country"). He was drafted to Collingwood in 99 and played some good quality footy with the magpies but his heart was always in Sydney. So in 2002 a deal was done to get the boy home where he has been a key figure in our forward line ever since and I'm sure he will be roaming the pockets for years to come.
Life membership that sounds pretty important, not something to be handed out to just any old Tom, Dick or Harry... except of course if you play 150 games for the Sydney Swans. That's what Nicksy achieved this week and good on him because the last 12 months have not been a walk in the park with injuries and reduced opportunities. This however has not taken any glitter of what has been a distinguished career with many highs. He was back in the side this week and provided some real impetus around the flanks and I'm sure Nicksy would love to attain the 200 game mark and personally I hope he gets there.
I'll leave you with a quote from pro golfer Hubert Green:
"Winning breeds confidence, and confidence breeds winning"
Let's hope the Swans can start breeding this Sunday as we take on Hawthorn, all we need is one win to get the ball rolling. So if I don't see you at the SCG on Sunday, you will hear from me next week.
