Great to finally get a win, but the performance was nothing to write home about IMHO. Played well in the 1st and 3rd quarters, and again we've had a second quarter disappearance act. I know we had shots on goal, but its been the same story all season.

And how many times now have we been beaten in the last quarter? Snuck away with 1 point today, but we were outscored 4 goals to 1. What used to be a strength was our endurance and ability to over run teams. This year, its been the exact opposite.

Dont get me wrong - Im over the moon with the win. When a team is out of form, a 1 point win is as good as any, but Im still waiting to see indications that we can play 4 quarters of consistent footy. Any other team may have over-run us today.

I don't think our 2nd quarter was actually that bad EXCEPT where it really matters which is on the scoreboard. We were outscored 5 goals to 1, yet also missed another 4 set shots on goal: O'Loughlin x 2 (one into the man on the mark), Hall, Saddington (hit the post). We had a pretty fair share of the ball in the 2nd quarter but just didn't make the most of it.

The 4th quarter we looked in a fair bit of trouble, not much run or energy, but somehow managed to pull it out which really is all that matters when youve lost 4 on the trot. Just the fact we have the 4 points will be a huge lift to the boys for next week.

I was going to post this previously when we talking about things going wrong etc. Last year before every home game, most if not all of the team would sit in the sun for the first 2 quarters of the reserves game and watch them. At half time they went in to prepare. Have not seen them do it this year UNTIL TODAY!!!

Four quarters of consistent football is overrated. This year, the Saints have won every game so far, but have won all four quarters of a game only twice. The most important consideration is not four quarters of consistent footy, but whether the Swans have a greater score than the opposition when the game ends. A three-quarter effort is usually good enough for that. The problem is that the Swans have only been playing well in two quarters. If the Swans can play consistently well for three quarters instead of just two, they should win against most opposition.

Midaro you are a grump - Saddington I thought did well in ruck and seemed really keen - what do you want them to play with not mistakes. Pressure is a funny thing. Nicks played well. Buchanan was great. Hall played his usual great self. Bolton great goal. Barry well played.

Were you really excited when we got crushed by the Hawks in a "good" game last year?

A loss is a loss and a win is four points. The Hawks played the same spirit-sapping spoiling game that gave them a win against the Dockers last week. We played them at that game and beat them. Maybe if we start winning these style of games then coaches won't play that way against us, having learned how to do it from Cressa's Cats.

BS its overrated. If we play 3 quarters of perfect footy, and then disappear in one (which what almost allowed us to win against Essendon), then we still may lose. Momentum will always see that one team dominates for a period, but all I want to see is the effort and skill level maintained for 4 quarters. This may or may not translate on the scoreboard, but its clear that so far this year, we have yet to see our team maintain consistency in one game, let alone across a few games.

As for the St Kilda example, they may have only won all four quarters twice, but this just means that their bad hasnt been that bad (unlike ours), and their good has been magnificent. Today's 101 point win - against a team that outplayed us last week - is an example to what 4 quarters of consistency can do for you.

A win against hawthorn is a good win. We shut down everitt really well. But our forward line was ordinary. Many missed shots, many dubious passes when a shot was a better option.

Positives to come out of it are:
Goodes at CHB. Could a posterier cruiciate be a good thing? Means we only have FB to cover and one of bolton, james, scuable etc can cover that long term.
Saddington. Couldnt beleive we went in without Doyle against Spider, but he did well.
And last but not least Leo Barry. Finally breaking the lines, having a bounce and creating play. The back line played really really well.

Basically we have to win these 3 games (todays being the first) and get some form before our draw gets tough again. We won, but form is still a way off.

God it was good to go into excitement overdrive in the last quarter, and score a great win, and just sing that bloody song!

Well, it wasn't pretty. far from it. In fact, the performance had definitely been beaten about the head a couple of times with the ugly stick.

But hey, a win is a win. You have to start SOMEWHERE. No team ever goes overnight from easybeats to competition crushers on the flick of a switch. If we want to win that elusive flag, we're not going to go from our current status to undefeated juggernauts in the space of a week.

At the moment, I'm happy to just savour a win, and look forward to next week.

Des and Damien have pretty much summed it up. When you've lost four on the trot it really doesn't matter how you win your next one - so long as you win it.

It was good in parts, ugly in parts but they gutsed it out and deserve the kudos for that. The scoreboard was more a reflection of our wastefulness in front of goal than the overall balance of the game - if they can improve 10% in that area confidence should lift even further.
