But there is absolutely no way in the world the image-conscious AFL would ever let anyone put messages like these up, let alone our club office.

Remember the hell that the Collingwood Cheer Squad went through when they put "They've salaries to spare, let's make em look like Bears." banner up in Brisbane last year and were warned by the AFL to take it off, which of course resulted in Eddie chucking a hissy fit and the Pies CS having a blank back of their banner.

I would have thought that M19's second one - with some editing to make it fit the banner - would be ok?

This thread shows how naive I am. Had no idea that the Swans Admin, let alone the AFL vetted these things. The AFL should have swastika in their emblem somewhere - even if it is subliminal.

The AFL wants things to be squeaky clean these days. It is totally depressing to see Grand Final banners as bland as "When the Saints go marching in" and "Go Crows", but that is what the AFL wants.

In the past banner messages used to be far bitchier than nowaday. But following the footy was a far more raw esperience than it is today, played out in stadiums with rooves, no terracing and even bloody suitwearers with their nachos instead of ferals with pies and a beer.

Essendon set a precedent when it put a message on their banner back in the dark old days. "Shame Sydney Shame, you are a disgrace to the game!" They got fined $43000 and rightly so. I have actually met the guy responsible for that banner, Shane from Essendon Cheer Squad; he is a typical smug Essendon supporter. I yelled at them after the match in 96; a few just looked at me as if to say, "You've got your revenge now, haven't you mate!".

But in all fairness, the club aren't going to want a lewd message on a banner.

BTW Do the club pay for the costs of bannermaking ?
