THE contentious 45m line at the SCG could vanish forever after Sunday's Sydney-St Kilda match.

AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson confirmed last night the league would revert to the 50m line for the SCG clash between Sydney and Adelaide on July 12.

Although the league has made it clear it is only a trial, the 50m line appears certain to remain if the move is a success.

The league was forced to change to a 45m line after the centre square at all grounds was expanded by 5m in a bid to cut down centre-bounce congestion.

Because the SCG is the shortest ground, the 45m line was introduced to ensure the line did not cross into the square.

But after a submission from statistics company Champion Data and concerns from some clubs, the league has agreed to a trial.

It will be a tight squeeze, meaning a 75cm tip of the 50m arc will be cut off.

Anderson said the aesthetics had been an important consideration in the switch to 45m.

But it played havoc with statisticians and has also been known to cause confusion among players, who are programmed to think the line is 50m, not 45m.

"From a statistical point of view 'inside 50s' is a commonly used measurement," Anderson said.

The AFL has also decreed that the centre square should become an oval to make the game more attractive to women, that umpires will in future wear the same colours as the home team and the judiciary will introduce automatic suspensions for interstate clubs to save them extra travel.

Anyone who comes out and declares with a straight face that the Yellow strip for the umpires was the correct decision in the Hawthorn game has to be a little suspect.

As for the arc...I'd like to see how we stack up with disposals inside the forward 50. If we're dishing off more than opposition teams there might be some anecdotal evidence we're not backing ourselves from 45-50m enough.

It would be hard to believe tho.
