    The end of optimism

    I know some people here will regard this as "the start of the excuses" but I no longer see how we can win on Sunday. Bazza is, at best, 50:50 to play and we still don't have our fullback back. Schneider, one of our best crumbers, is out and if Nick Davis plays he'll be doing so carrying an injury. Goodes is far from 100% and there's no Saddo. Nic Fosdike will be back but he's just getting over tonsilitis so can't be 100%.

    And we're playing a team in top form with very few injuries and no suspensions (for a change). Just trying to rearrange the forward line without Bazza (bring alternating Doyle or Ball to FF?) will be a challenge for Roos.

    If we get close this Sunday Paul Roos is a genius.

      We were understrength against Port last year as well, though admittedly not by as much.

      If Bazza plays I reckon we're in with a chance. Without him it will take a miracle.

          Ah yes, this game is shaping up as the stuff that dreams of - the perfect start in our charge to the premiership ....

              Agree.

              I really don't want to think about how we are going to play if we loose Hall through suspension!

              I'm staying positive though... just.

                      There are not many reasons why you would pick us to win.

                      However, (and I've mentioned this in another thread) the teams don't differ to much from last year. We are hurt by injuries and both sides have had a retirement or two. Presuming teams line up as last week

                      Swans

                      Out: Cresswell, Roberts-Thomson, Saddington, Schauble, Schneider, Sundqvist
                      In: Maxfield, Bevan, Buchanan, Doyle, McVeigh, Ablett

                      Saints

                      Out: Black, Burke, Peckett, Lawrence, Montagna
                      In: Knobel, Baker, Penny, Schwarze, Ball

                      Kirk held Hayes to 11 touches. We won 15.22 (112) 9.7 (61)

                      Now I know St Kilda have come on in leaps and bounds, but they stack up pretty poorly against us historically.

                      They are playing us at the SCG, a very different proposition to other grounds and where we have an 80% record for the 2003 and 2004 seasons. In addition St Kilda have beaten us once in the last 6 seasons, and haven't won at the SCG since 1998

                              Bombers 2000

                              We had the same situation against the all-conquering Bombers side of 2000. We went into that match with seven of our best side out through injury.

                              Incredibly, we were actually in front in the last quarter, before the Bombers overhauled us. We lost by 13 points, but it was a very brave loss, considering that nobody had beaten the Bombers to that stage of the season and we were depleted by injury.

                              Can we do the same again? I hope so, but I cannot be remotely optimistic until after the tribunal has had its say.

                                  Not everyone... all I wanted was him to punch the ball in our backline rather than try and mark.
                                  I think you'll find there a lot more Saddo lovers than haters...

                                      Not me. As I've previously posted, in the past few weeks I've seen Saddo and Nicks as the mature glue that's helping our midfield lift.

                                      Read on - I also say that a recovering Fossie is a worry too. But not one snide comment?

                                      But the big worry is a complete rebalancing of our forwards. Even a Bazza being largely inefficient as he was on Saturday is still a focal point up there. How does Roos rebalance the team if he goes?

                                          I'm with you on the optimism front - with or without Hall.

                                          Let's not forget the pathetic exhibitions of football that the Aints have put up against the Swans in the last few seasons - bar this one of course. Remember the infamous draw as a spectacle, from a few years ago?

                                          Without Hall we will need to play a similar type of football - excessive flooding, frequent stoppages, staging for frees (did I say that?) and all the other garbage that characterised the Saints play from 1999 onward.

                                          Won't be pretty but they'll be getting their own back.

                                                  Maybe I am a internal optomist, but I am quitely confident of a good showing vs the Saints, after the Saints 100+ point demolition of Carlton, they may not be as up for this game as otherwise considering injuries and possible suspension. Write off the Swans at your own peril

                                                      If Hall does go (no, pleeeeaase no), it will just leave a perfect opportunity for a player or two to step up. For me I hope its Nicksy or James or Doyle. Not necessarily as CHF, but just to fill in for the loss of talent,presence and effort that Hall provides (if he is out),
