    Western Sydney ....

I know not everyone wants another SYdney team, but it will happen one day, so how about some ideas for nickname and colours.

I think australian sport has just about exhausted the animal kingdom, so I'm thinking a little left field here.

Western Sydney Pounders - NSW sky blue jumper. (ala SOO side)

Pounders - meaning tough bastards who'll pound you into the ground, and/or big waves coming into our surf beaches for those outside sydney.

I can just see the headlines now, when they turn on a final quarter blitz to beat the swans in front of 80,000 at telstra.
    "Outstanding Quarter, Pounders".

    West Warriors.

Also I reckon give them a NSW sky blue look, will help attract the Western league market.

It may be that the next Sydney team will retain their colours like we did, in which case the red-whiteand blue of Footscray may soon represent the West of Sydney.

Frankly I do not believe the AFL bulldust about keeping 10 teams in Victoria, sooner or later someone else will join us and Fitroy and leave Melbourne.

          Out West = RL supporters

Many old RL supporters in Sydney once identified/still do with a VFL club based on colour or mascot..

          Wests Rugby Leauge = Magpies = C'wood
St George = St Kilda or Swans (red n white)
(remember its not so long ago Swans were hanging of Easts or roosters or whatever they are these days).
Ford Fans might go for the cats

BUT .. out of left field ... Wests Razorbacks for b'ball
And before you dismiss it .. think of Soccer and AFL tie ups ..

          Just some ideas

BUT Pounders = Surf DOES not=west sydney
Ducks one week, Swans the next... just don't be a Goose till October!

I have a very strong feeling it will be eithier:

            Western Bulldogs
            or
            West Sydney Kangaroos

Doubt a new club will be formed, instead a 'saviour' package will only be given if a club moves.....similar to how Fitzroy were forced into merger.

exactly what i was thinking. But i think it could be a while from now.

Great to see this topic on the board again.

My money would be on the Western Bulldogs. I get the feeling that their "Brand" is already tailored to Sydney's West (pity Danny Southern isn't playing anymore ). Can't imagine where their home ground would be.

As for the Kangaroos, it looks like the Manuka experiment seems to be working for them. I'd love to see them moved up there ASAP actually. The perverse irony that Allen Aylett, God-Father of the AFL (who oversaw and forced our relocation), should have to preside over his beloved Roos leaving Victoria causes me to salivate worse than one of those stupid Newfoundland dogs.

Maybe not. 16 teams must exist until the end of the current TV rights. If the Dogs and Dees and Roos are still bleeding AFL coffers then, there is no guarantee that the funsing to those teams will continue when the new deal is struck.

I presume our Melbourne based fans in hindsight would rather their club had moved to Sydney rather than merged with another team like Fitzroy.

If the AFL were to fund a team to move, I really think the Dogs would be the best team to do it.

i dont think there will be a second team moved to sydney until they are a realistic chance of becoming more successful here than they are in melbourne.
kangaroos will continue to flirt with canberra and the afl will start sending preseason matches into western sydney.
meanwhile the swans will have to become a regular draw at telstra dome with demographics showing that they are drawing people from the western areas to those games. brisbane to feature there once their star fades a little and we can be a marketable chance of "beating" another city. collingwood will be instrumental in this. there will be more goodwill exercises with teams, particularly i expect the doggies doing lots of school visits and clinics.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

I really do not think we will see a second Sydney club in the foreseeable future. If Kangas and Melbne struggle after 100 years and some success, Swans after 20 plus years in Sydney have their second best season since the eighties and crowds dwindle a bit! The capital required to start from scratch, even with a relocation, just does not make sense. I think there will be more ?hybridisation? games spread around the country etc., The Gold Coast could even be a better bet as that SE Qld conurbation just grows and grows, subject of course, to the demographic that attends the Lions.

And that growing conurbation is madely made up of retiring ex-Vics who, as one Queensland once quipped, "arrive with a Tshirt and 5 bucks and don't change either!"

That's a good point, and evidently an alarming trend of NSWs heading south, previously unheard of, swelling the ranks of the South / South!

I reckon they should have a team in Tassie or the NT before they have another team in Sydney. Rugby League is going to be way too strong in the forseeable future to allow another Sydney team. Also with Rugby Union getting stronger and Soccer Australia revamping the NSL, I think it will be just a little too tough to get people supporting a second team in Sydney.
                              Go you mighty BLOODBOYS!
