I must say in the early days most away fans were very disparaging about the Swannettes, the pre-game entertainment (who can forget the balloon mob Mr Gaspo) et al.

"This is not footy this a f$#%ing circus!" was oft heard in the Brewongle from visitors, where most of us Swannies huddled together more like a Sheffield Shield crowd!

Oh come, you spoilsports. "Show it to Em Sydney" was pure cult. So tacky that it was totally cool. Matches days in 86/87 were like attending an episode of Its a Knockout. You had the Swanettes in their garish sequined and feathered monstrocities dancing on their podiums after goal, and giant monsters running around the field at half time.

It was almost overdrive, as there was so much to take in. Sport perfect for bandwagoners, always something to keep you entertained, even if you have an attention spam of a 4 year old! Bring out your worst Hawaiian shirt, no as little about the game, and you're set for the day of your life!!! (Even my Mum wanted to go in those days. )

The lyric were so cult. The 80s were such a funky era!!!

"We'll you've heard about the Magpies, Bulldogs and the Blues
You've heard about the Tigers, Cats and Kangaroos
We'll you've heard about the Bombers, Cazaly and the rest
      WELL, MELBOURNE YOU'VE GOT NOTHING,
      CAUS SYDNEY'S GOT THE BESSSSSSSSSSSSST!

      Syyyyyd-knee! Syyyydddd-knee!

      Show it to 'em Sydney
      Show em you're the Swans
Show em what you're made of
      Get up where you belong!

      Show it to em Sydney
      Give em 123 *UGH*
Show em what your're made of
      Give em one for me!

      SHOW EM *UGH*
      SHOW EM *UGH*
      SHOW EM *UGH*
      SHOW EM *UGH*

      Show it to em Sydney
      Show em you're the Swans
Show em what you're made of
      Your the Miiiiiiiighty Swaaaaans!

      You show em Sydney!"

Pure cult, no! (especially when at one match when Hawthorn were pumping us by 100 points they played it after a Dawks goal, to a mixture of groans and laughter from the locals.) Man, I'm getting chills when I hear such a deep and meaningful club song. Richmond, eat your heart out, don't you think!

If you thought that was exciting, wait till I get to tell you about the two versions of "Kick On" which replaced "Show Em Sydney" from 89 until about 1993.

Yep, there's a reason why the Swans were such a failure in Sydney for so long...

Must admit that I use to love Show it to em Sydney.

          Not after every goal though.

After every goal was fun in the last quarter against the Bombers in '87. I was watching the game on the TV and the Swans had kicked so many goals in the last quarter that they were having ad breaks only after about every third goal. Got to hear it a lot. Yes, it was a bit cringeworthy, but when you're 19 and seeing your side handing out a real spanking, it's only the goals that matter.

Shame that Wozza missed that shot on goal late in the last quarter. Had it gone through we would have had the record.

That pretty well sums it up culturally for me.

I understand the meaning, and generally it is inaccurate.

But, I know it was a throw away line and I am just having some fun with it.

I'm sure Des isn't taking any of my stupid little jabs about it the wrong way.

Which I suppose leads on to my comments about the Swanettes.
No-one will ever convince me that being able to watch good looking cheerleader(esque) type girlies is a bad thing
