On trading established players. If we are looking at this option seriously, we should only trade away players who we could find a replacement within our list, NOT the ones we can't.

Yeah that's right I was referring to Schauble.

Having one key defender in the team is hardly the perfect situation, especially when he goes down to injury.

I think the point was having two would actually be a good thing.

I have not heard one person on this board think anything close to that.

For the record:

Since winning our B&F at the end of 2000, Schauble has played 52 of 83 games, or 63%.

Which isn't very good.

I'm reckon the rumours probably start here, which doesn't say much for their validity. The boy seems to be enjoying his footy of late, and playing with Barry Hall and Mick O'Loughlin next to you, I don't know why you wouldn't!

As for Saddington, despite being many people's whipping boy, I reckon he is down the very bottom of the list for the Swans to trade (by those who actually have an influence on these things) and I believe that's where he should stay. He's got talent to boot and is very versatile. Would hate to see him leave the Swans.

WE DO NOT TRADE Kennelly, Schneider and O'keefe !

Why, because the years of preparatory work is now coming to fruition and all three of them (injuries barring) look like they will be very usefull (at the least) long term AFL prospects.

Kennelly (along with Leo) is at the heart of our 'running off the backline' which is a key to our style of play.

O'Keefe (along with Hall) currently provides our first target up forward by constantly making hard leads up the ground. Does this all game and is poossibly our most improved player on the list. He also has size, motor and body shape to turn into a very useful midfield option, and i could go on

Schneider, up until his injury was considered to be one of the best "finds" in the league for a good few years. He kicked 30 odd goals in his first full season as well as contributing with clever hand skills. He consistently held the ball in the forward line, using his speed and tackling ability.

Your right, lets get rid of them in the hope of getting a decent KPP, these blokes are crap !!!!!

Trotting out this motherhood stuff might make you feel good, but it has nothing to do with what I was talking about.

Explain your strategy for obtaining the ready-made player(s) that Roos says he needs. Put up or shut up.

Despite Roos comments I doubt that the Swans will be involved in any big trades this period.

Whilst a quality key position defender would be a welcome addition, there are simply not that many that will be available come trade time.

Very few clubs actually have one to spare, in fact most of the other clubs are in the same boat as us.

An option to take would be to target a 2nd tier player (e.g. Zantuck) for a lower pick in the hope that he might be able to turn it around in a new environment ala Tom Harley at Geelong.

I find it highly unlikely that any of our starting 22 players (fossie and saddo included) would be traded unless we could do a sheedy like deal

I would think LRT is possible trade bait given his height. If we could get a good key defender for him it would be worth it.

Huh?

The Swans (at least according to AI at the start of the season) think that LRT will develop into a good key defender.

If they are correct, why would they trade him for a different good key defender?

And if they are wrong, why would another club give up a good key defender in return?

IMO LRT is several years away from at best a mid level player. His kicking is very average and when he has time to think he seems unsure of himself. We might get something now before other teams wake up to his skill level.

I think you have missed the point that Cliff is trying to make.

IF the Swans can identify a ready-to-play quality KP defender and his club is willing to part with him, the Swans will have to come up with something decent to trade for him. A package of Powell, Sundqvist and a 3rd round choice (say) aint going to do it. Therefore we would have to brace ourselves to lose one or more of our own quality young players.

I don't think Cliff is necessarily advocating this, especially not with a specific name in sight. He's just pointing out the obvious about how trading works.

at the trade table i think it comes down not to a players individual worth, but the difference in value to one team from that to another.
thus you have the two following commodities.

1. Performing players who specialise in an area that you've got covered.
2. Players who are underperforming but give the impression that there's still talent that may develop in a new environment.

I would say the former category describes our smaller forwards, with the reservation that we want some of these in the midfield within the next three years. Buchanan and O'keefe may be possible offers.

Fosdike and Noggy may fit the underperforming potential bill. I've got a soft spot for both of these players, but when it comes to the crunch....

A chill in my heart comes up when I think of the third trade cliche, the injured champion of whose injuries we know of a great deal more than the outside world does.

btw I would not consider him out of consideration in the future, but I doubt any club is going to be interested in Saddington when he's not going to be in full training until very close to the pre-season. I think he'd otherwise be in the "underperforming with potential" bag. I'm not bagging Saddo, but I think other clubs might see him to have that untapped ability.
