Firstly, I completely agree that he is in awesome form at the moment.

And obviously a captain has to be a great player and demand a spot in any starting 18.

But there are other things to consider.

Firstly his age. The players have to not only respect his ability as a player, but trust in his leadership qualities.

Which he may or may not possess...

Would the players trust in the football experience of an 18 year old first year player as captain?
No.
Would they trust in the experience of say Paul Williams.
Most likely.
Two extremes, and somewhere in the misslde there is a line where a player has earnt the respect of his peers with his footy smarts.

Now leadership qualities.
Does he sit and encourage players constantly?
Or is he one who is encouraged?

Will having the role as captain reduce his on field performance?
This is one of the reasons a players is made vice captain, to see what affect it may have.

I aren't saying that Kirk shouldn't be our next leader.
Far from it.
I think he is one of perhaps 5 who should be highly considered.

But there is more to that selection than simply having a purple patch on the field.

Adam Goodes was apparently going to be our next captain mid to end of last year.
What happened to him?
he got injured and now no mention.

What if Kirk is injured?
Or his form drops off?
Will he be replaced with someone else in form then?

He MAY be a great candidate, BUT...
Don't think that being a great football player automatically makes a great captain.

i don't think being a team clown has anything to do with being a great captain thats bull****. plus he plays footy not foty so there is no chance he will be captain of a foty team. but a chance for a footy team.

A lot of things go into consideration before someone can become captain.

From the outside he looks like a good option, but whether he wants to or is able to elevate himself above the rest of the team to become captain remains to be seen.

Well, what a turn around for Kirky's fortunes on this board....!!!

Personally, I think that he should either be made next captain (that will satisfy some of you) or should be traded (that would seem to satisfy many others whose vitriol against Kirk has been nothing short of extraordinary over the past couple of years).

Funny that this thread has been started, cos actually, b4 logging out last night I was about to post a tongue-in-cheek item, asking if anyone NOW thought that we should trade or delist the Captain...

Kirk was the obvious choice for our next captain in my mind... and he would be good.... with jude as vice captain

but since barry hall was on talking footy im starting to think he may be a good option anyone else see barry hall as skipper?? he shows awesome leadership

I'll stick with Crouch.

Only player other than Maxfield and Hall who I've seen regularly encourage the players verbally and show some passion while doing so.

Hall is one who I consider a top candidate.

Get the feeling that the club may require at least a few more years service with the Swans with him though.
When he was first mentioned I was a bit sceptical, but the idea has grown on me.

Although I still think that ideally a captain should be a part of the misfield.

If Schuable hadnt of missed so much footy i would of considered him a chance.

The four top contenders for me would be Kirk, Crouch, Hall and possibly Schauble.

The next group would be Goodes, Jude Bolton, Kennelly and Barry. (Other than Leo Barry, I feel this group would be more likely to experience a drop in form with the added pressure of captaincy, but then, you never do know...)

I also think Williams would be a good captain, but is probably too old.

But, it's Crouch for me. Younger than Kirk, consistent and fair player, still improving, hard trainer, encouraging for the younger guys and older alike (manages to calm down Bazza a bit), takes pride in the club and works hard outside of footy (as the face of Team Swans). However, would be happy with any of the top 4.

then a few vice captains with the one of Crouch/Kirk who missed out as captain, Hall and maybe a young gun like Bevan

I don't think we have vice-captains, just the leadership group. I can't remember who's in it, just random stuff like Brad Seymour was in it last year, Goodes wasn't in it last year but is now (???) and Hall isn't in it at all, I think. I guess guys like Crouch, Barry, B1 etc would make up the 6-7. I'm pretty sure Schauble is in it.
