It certainly could affect performance if a new name attracts more supporters away from other football codes and sports. If you have 80,000 Sydney fans cheering for the team instead of 30.000 at a match. I'd like to see that. More fans means greater exposure in the media. At the moment it seems NRL and Rugby get far too much coverage in NSW than they deserve. AFL IS the true national sport.

History is a funny thing, The name 'Swans' was not there at the start. Someone made history by changing the name. Lets make history again and give Sydneysiders a chance to give OUR team a name chosen by Sydney. It's not a Melbourne club any more. Maybe the club could run a contest to find a new name with a life membership as the prize.

I don't believe existing fans will stop being a supporter just because of a name change. At the moment the official name is The Sydney Australian Football Club. Go The Sydney Reds.
    You Sir are a moron.

Plus the official name of the club is - The South Melbourne Football Club trading as the Sydney Swans Australian Football Club.
    Once was, now elsewhere

        Wow, really still the case?

I was under the impression the South Melbourne part was officially discarded during the first privatisation, and when returned to a member based club in the nineties, "Sydney Australian Football Club" was the official name, using the AFL owned brand of "Sydney Swans".

the book i read on the swans written in 1997 says it changed its name officially to the sydney swans australia football club and then to whatever it is now from that south melbourne thing... tho it may be wrong and i am happy to be corrected
