Why isn't McVeigh getting more ground time? When he comes onto the ground, he always looks classy, and he appears to use the ball well. I cannot understand why, he is not used more.

It might simply be that Roos is easing him into AFL football, taking a longer-term view of his future. This is what Geelong did with GAjr and it seems to be working.

I tend to agree with you there. He hasn't been moved into a pocket with a view to working towards a midfield place, he pretty much seems to come on and go to the middle. I love McVeigh's work around the ground and I love that he gives us someone running through the midfield who will actually hit targets.

Would have been great to take Schammer, letting Jared come to us via a trade after he finished his contract.Though of course, I am wishing for our club to be not nice.

Footy isn't about being nice. It is a business. It is about getting the best player that is available at the time of the draft.

Whether McVeigh is that player or not remains to be seen, and we won't know for quite a few years.

McVeigh still has a very slight frame so putting him full-time in the packs would probably get him injured. He is still very young and this year Roos probably just wants to give him a taste of what its like in there. Next pre-season he should be hitting the gym, working harder on the track, and he will get full-time midfielder status at the start of the 2005 season.

Compare McVeigh's body to Bevan's and you will see that Roos is developing our kids the right way.

Funny you should mention Schammer BRB - I was just thinking that with his performances this season that maybe we errred by taking McVeigh above him.

He is holding his own in the Freo midfield at the moment and we could certainly use him to assist Jude and the boys

Having said that we got bagged about not taking Salopek who probably hasn't shown as much as Jared has to date

mcveigh is being eased in for sure.... perhaps 10 more minutes or some sort of increase is in order though in terms of game time!!

My gut feel is that McVeigh will be better than Schammer. Schammer has a smaller body and thus will mature faster. For McVeigh, it will be a slower process and thus the immediate impact will be lesser. However, once McVeigh fills out, he will be more damaging. He could use his size to advantage, something Schammer could never do.

True midfielder, with great skill, reknown stamina, some gutso, pace and smart. Will be either a gun or a very good attacking midfielder.

Yes watching Mcveigh , Salopeck and Schammer is going to be very interesting, and unfortunatly most of the pressure is going to be on jarred and the Swans.

I heard from knowlegeable recruiting sources that McVeigh was guaranteed by Sydney to be taken quite a long time before the draft, hence we were never going to trade that pick. He was highly rated but the Sydney factor was important, there was a perception that there were players in the Sydney backyard being overlooked (i.e. Hayes), and that to retain a local priority pick you had to be serious about drafting very good local talent. I am also reliably informed (and this will check out), that the club was scared off when it visited Salopek. It came through clearly how much the death of his mother had affected the family and that it would be likely to want to return home and be with them. McVeigh was a safe bet. I wouldn't surrender much for his brother, though Essendon will try to talk him up.

to compare schammer and mcveigh at this point in their careers is ridiculous, schammer has been given massive amounts of game time right from the word go. he played all of last season and is getting significantly more ground time than mcveigh...

Don't worry Penga, Schammer is just this years 'better than, but picked later' player.

Last year it was Salopek, but as his star isn't shining as brightly anymore the anti McVeigh brigade has moved onto Schammer. Next year it will be somebody else but that should be just about it.

By then McVeigh will have had the time that the club and his supporters on this board knew he would need to develop into the quality player he will become.

I hope we keep McVeigh as I think he has the potential talent to be a star.

Interesingly, our midfield could perhaps be awesome in a few years - McVeigh, Buchanan, Bevan, Schneider, Kennelly.
