    Build-up

I think tonights game should be an absolute cracker but its no really being treated as such by the media down here, just wondering what the build-up has been like in Sydney. The Kangas are the underdogs and thats the way they like it,much like ourselves.I just hope the players dont see this as the easy win that alot of people seem to think were going to have,if theres one club who love this type of pressure its the Roos.

mate, there is less chance of meida build up in Sydney (unless Eddie is involved) than there is BH getting a free kick in the goal square. There is a 1/4 of a page in the SMH, dont know about the Tele, and that is about umpires, not about the game. I was speaking to my Sydney brother-in-law this morning. His kid plays AFL, he comes with us fairly often (including last week). I asked him if he wanted to come - he did not even know they were playing in Syd. We have a long way to go up here.

There?s been very little media attention here to our game this week. Tonight is Bledisloe Cup Night (Rugby Union) in Sydney, which is probably the biggest sporting event of the year here. Even Rugby League has had a difficult time getting media attention off the Wallabies in Sydney this week.

To give you a little perspective about the (RU) Bledisloe Cup match tonight.

There will be 80,000 at the game who paid an average of over $120 per ticket; some corporate packages sold for $3000 each for this game - the gate takings alone will exceed $10 million tonight. So as an event it?s at least on a par with an AFL grand final.

There is also the added attraction that this is also a true international fixture with a very long history and an intense rivalry between not only the teams involved but also indeed the countries themselves.

Well put. That is why it gives me the absolute @@@@s that I have to miss yet another swans game. Why, oh why, cant the AFL get off their arses and come up with a plan to allow their games to move once the ARU releases its fixtures so that there are no clashes. The AFL in Sydney can never expect to compete with such union games, they should just accept it and become flexible. There must have been 5 occasions this year when a big union game has been on at the same time as a swans game.

I thought the build up has been pretty good down here.

I've seen a it promoted in ad form 5 or 6 times yesterday.

Sharpie, why should we move OUR games, when they are scheduled first?

The ARU doesn't get anything at all out of being bloody-minded. They expect - and receive - the AFL's blessing in their scheduling of matches at Docklands. Yet they're not willing to be equally accomodating in Sydney? Screw them.

Why should they when the AFL is trying to move in on their territory ?
I mean to say that is probably their perspective. The AFL should choose its battles with the ARU very carefully. They mean us no good !! Obviously they see AFL and the Swans as a threat which I think we could be if only we could get a run on here or there.

It sounds as though the AFL will be happy to screw them in the future, if that earlier article is anything to go by. Can't come quick enough, IMHO.

And what do you think they're doing by staging Test matches in Melbourne?

                        I agree with your point.
The AFL are winning in Melb, ARU in Sydney. I think the AFL should not let them in at all in Melbourne. IE the Dome. Cos we still have the chance of taking it to them in Sydney if the Swans win a couple of Flags, or if the grass roots thing ever really gets going via the SFL.
I agree screw them but choose the position and do it really hard.

oh and also by the ARU being so agro about it . it could kind of put the AFL in a winning position by defualt. As long as the Swans keep drawing 23 000 + to all their home games that is.
IE. The Union is expected to out draw and out rate the Swans. So every time a really really big crowd comes down to Telstra stadium oz for a big swans game (and they will) or if the Swans should really rate higly on TV for a final or a (fingers crossed) grand final, then it creats just that little chink in the ARU armour.
Let them be top dog I say and let the Swans do what they do best - play as the under dog and when no one expects them to win .......

The AFL should move the swans games simply because they can not, and in Sydney will never be able to, compete with union when both are played in Sydney at the same time.

Games like Waratahs v Brumbies and Wallabies v All Blacks will win hands down every time because they are 2 of the biggest sporting events (not just games, actual events) in Sydney each year. They are bigger than the AFL equivalent blockbusters. They would rate up there with AFL grand finals. The AFL can not compete by scheduling a regular home & away fixture against those. There are about another ten regular swans games to go to each year if people miss out and go to the rugby event instead.

Sorry, I don't see why the ARU can't just grow up and start working with the AFL, rather than against it. It's not as if the AFL hasn't been extremely accomodating in Melbourne.

Our games are scheduled first; our games should stay when and where they're scheduled.
