It is heartbreaking to lose. But whe you are more worried about a guy you share every day of your life with dying in front of you than the game you are playing, things like that can happen.

Your right......... a game of football would pale in signifigance next to your mate dying, I'm amazed the players even stayed out on the field.Last edited by sWAns63; 8 August 2004, 01:15 AM.Comment

Dunno. I'm not long home, caught up with the terrible news re the trainer, looked through what others have said. It was a very strange last qtr of football. The Swans really did nothing. Have no idea what impact the medical emergency had on the players, or the coaching staff, but everyone really did looked a bit stunned. We thought it was just because the Kangas started to play. Who knows, and sorry I have no idea what the free in the centre was for..Comment

Here's my take on the effect the tradegy, as far as the game goes.
The Swans typically take their foot off the accelerater when they have a big lead. I think this is what was happening for the first half of the final quarter. But at that stage not all was lost, and a few changes by Roos could have easily rectified things.
However, there were 4 guys sitting on the bench at all times during the time that the tragedy was unfolding, witness to everything unfolding. Add to this any guys that were interchanged throughout the last 10 minutes of the quarter. Also, the runners would have been affected, and so may not have been in a fit state to deliver messages properly.
Even if Roos was unaware of what was going on (in itself highly unlikely), his orders may have not been delivered properly, meaning that the necessary changes did not take place as they should have. If Roos did know, then he would have been understandably distracted from carrying out his job at the critical times.
Finally, if not every swans player on the field is playing at their best, our team typically performs poorly. At least half a dozen players on the field would have been fully aware of the tradegy from spending time on the bench. Not everyone might have, but I think enough would have been aware to seriously affect the team's play.Visit my eBay store -

the one thing we (people at the game) are forgetting was that 10 did the right thing and made no mention of what was happening during the telecast, thus not making a spectacle of something very real.
So anyone not actually seeing what was going on and watching the game televised thought we just folded as we have in the past. We have a friend we SMS during the games and she was going off right after until we asked her if she knew who was in trouble on the sideline. She had no idea what we were talking about.
A lot of people are hurting at the moment for a couple of reasons. Lets keep that in mind when posting over the next couple of days and try and keep this board the enjoyable discussion driven forum it is.Here's my heart and you can break it

Over near the interchange bench in the last quarter Tadgh didn't even make an attempt to get to a marking contest. He seemed uninterested and now it appears why.
I think most players on the field would know what was happening on the sideline."As everyone knows our style of football is defensive and unattractive, and as such I have completely forgotten how to mark or kick over the years" - Brett Kirk

I just watched the last quarter again, with a neutral observer, and we both agreed it appeared unlikely that most players would have been aware of what was happening on the sidelines. Even if they knew something was happening it seems extremely unlikely that they would have known exactly what was the situation.
In any event, the game was lost in the first 10 minutes of the last quarter, before it all was said to have happened.
I think using a tragic death as an excuse for the loss, when there were obviously other factors that contributed more, is rather dishonourable and callous to the man who died.
As I said before, we should focus on the actual football game and what went wrong and not try to bring Wally's death into it.
If football seems rather trivial now, which it definitely is compared to real life, then I think there is little point in discussing anything.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

You need to back of NMW. Your posts about last night's 4th quarter are just coming across as arrogant and heartless.Occupational hazards:

I completely give up then - I have tried to make it quite clear that I am simply focussing on the football, and in particular the first ten minutes, but obviously most people can't see that.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.
