    Ess V Sydney Matchups

Big game, important both clubs get the matchups right as both teams fortunes tend to depend on the defence and forward line with our midfield's both less heralded than most other top sides.

Key matchup for essendon defensivley is O'Loughlan, agile, quick and tall he showed what he can do when a side underestimates him. Fletcher gets him. Bolton the other option, however he is better as a forward/back flank and not suited to such a big job.

Dean Solomon to take Hall after a match-winning defensive effort on Tredrea. Solomon has the strength and pace to limit Hall, and he is our closest-checking defender available.

Goodes, will he play forward or in defence? Up forward, Bolton has to get him, in defence, he would probably take Lucas?

O'Keefe, a tough matchup as a third/fourth forward. Richards may get him, or Andrew Welsh/Mark McVeigh with McVeigh favoured for his better strength overhead and is quicker off the mark.

    Our Forwards.
Lloyd will be 80-90% fit at best, admitted he was playing at 50% with his injured shoulder on the weekend.
Lucas should be better third week back from injury, will relish the big game atmosphere. Who takes him?
will Kirk tag Hird, or will Bolton get him again?
We will then probably go with MJ up forward to pressure the defenders, Ramanaskus may play forward. There is also a chance we will go tall with Laycock and Bolton. If the selectors reward reserves performances, you may see the unveiling of the Essendon FC version of Davey in the flashy small forward Andrew Lovett. A real X-Factor style player, can kick some freak goals.

Looking forward to a great game.

Goodes will probably line up on the wing like the Melbourne game where he was able to float around half back and sneak up to the forward line on occasions.
Leo Barry will probably take Lloyd again.Kirk has been playing as an attacking midfielder of late with other teams tagging him so I don't know if that will happen again this game.
I would like to see Doyle and Ball changing out of the forward pocket to create a few headaches.

I was worried if the selectors brought Wellman back in for this game we would be too tall and be out-run, however going through the matchups: Wellman in for Mercuri will happen if Wellman gets through training without reinjuring himself.
then: Bolton gets Goodes on the Wing/Forward etc. with McPhee the second option if Goodes dominates. Bolton = tag/defend whereas moving McPhee onto him is a second-resort, conceding we have noone to effectivley go with him if Bolton fails put McPhee head-to-head on him. would go Hird but realisticly it takes no brains to push Goodes forward this being the case.
Wellman on the bench takes the resting ruckman if they are forward.
otherwise we'd need to move Lucas/Bolton into defence, not an ideal circumstance to be in as this limits our attacking potency.
on Hird/Kirk, i'm sure if Roos thinks Kirk is the best option on Hird he will go with him. Stopping Hird has to be more important than attacking with Kirk?

The Captain has turned into a key ball winner for the Swans and it is unlikely he will get the tagging role. Also, I don't think he is strong enough overhead to go with Hird for the entire game.

Craig Bolton's form has been Ok and I don't see why he wouldn't get the job again.

How many Greg Lougannis' ( dives ) will Matthew " Pretty Boy " Lloyd pull off this week ?

I rated his effort in the first quarter against Collingwood, which I was at, a 9.7 out of 10 and his best of the 156 Greg Lougannis' this season....

Note to the Swans Cheer Squad - I believe you should make up signs starting from 5/10 all the way to 10/10 in regard to the free/s Lloyd will invariably get for his diving exploits on Saturday night !

It will look great on TV and will send a subtle message to D@#*HEAD Gieschen about the inconsistency of umpiring decisions regarding Lloyd and the other forwards in the comp who get not even half the due free kicks that Lloyd gets.

Umpires secretly want to be divers at the Olympics, hence there love of Lloyd's " special " dive free kicks every weekend....

P.S. I get the feeling Noggy ( Luke Ablett ) will get Tird first up ( god help us ), followed by Kirky within 15 minutes.

I beliebe Kirk will get hird first up unless he gets tagged himself.
i believe craig bolton should get Lloyd he seems to do well on full forwards and shauble is to slow on the lead.

Mark McVeigh on Benny matthews should be good.

            Goodes V Mcphee

            Crouch V smallest key forward.

McPhee isn't defensive enough to take Goodes unless we are going to concede we don't have anyone to limit his effectiveness and hence play someone on him that will hurt him the other way.

Lloyd will only be 75-80% fit conservativley, was 50% on the weekend and it was obvious when he would let the ball fall behind his wrestle with Clement, was playing to ensure Clement didn't take another forward alone i believe, pretty good game for having a shoulder injury, 1 goal and gave off three or four.

Jason Laycock up forward will be a big suprise to you swans fans, hasn't played there at AFL level yet as its been wet in the games he's played but he's a great mark.

Laycock is a tall forward/ruckman. Looked reasonably good, but can't imagine him having a huge effect on the game.

Laycoack will be an unknown package for this game. He is a very solid mark and decent kick, he has the potential to give the Bombers the required life needed to knock us off. Or he could do absolutely nothin. I know which id like to see....

If we get another 5 days weather like we had today it's pretty safe to presume Laycock will have little effect.

I suggested a similar idea in this thread, along with a way that holding up the signs can be co-ordinated.

Eight people sitting in a row would do the "diving scores". More could do this, provided an even number of people are involved.

To make the signs, you will need thick cardboard as backing, so that the signs stay stiff when held upright. Corrugated cardboard may work well. Each sign would have one number on it. Every second sign is either 5 or 0, to represent the decimals, and is a different colour to the other numbers. (That is, the first number is black on white, and the second number - the decimals - is white on black.) The signs should be quite large, perhaps A2 in size. To make it easy to hold them up, sturdy handles made of rope can be glued to the back.

To co-ordinate the numbers, one person acts as leader and calls out "diving score" when the opponent makes an obvious dive and an unmerited free kick is paid.

For a bit of variety, two numbers in each position could be made, so the "diving scores" can vary a bit. For good results, "low" and "high" should be specified when holding up the signs. Low scores might look like 7 5 6 0 7 5 7 5, and high scores might look like 9 5 8 0 8 5 9 5.

Laycock is a very strong mark of the ball, he has the best set of hands i've seen on a young player. However, if there is any suspect area of his game it is his upper body strength, I don't know whether he can take as good a pack mark at AFL level as he can in the VFL - big difference in strength of defenders at the two levels. He is a good kick, but has struggled disposal wise in his 2 games, mind you it was wet in both. If he plays forward, I expect him to kick 3 goals minimum. He's young, and like all big men this early - they can do anything or nothing.

Looked good against Carlton when he was on.The commentators mentioned he had kicked a bag recently in the VFL but his kicking looked average at best.
I presume Peverill will play on Jude Bolton or Kirk as they are our main posession gatherers at the moment.I think Kirk has become too important to us to tag Hird.
I think Hird will get plenty of touches no matter who is on him so the important thing is to try and make him accountable when we have the ball and drag him down to his backline where he will not be as damaging.Easier said than done.

There is two weaknesses in Hird's game.
                              1. He pays no credit to his opponent, often allowing them to run 50m clear of him. However, this isn't important as he is being worn close most games so the opponent is of little concern to him.
                              2. He has a tendancy to play on a lot, trying to get our midfield moving forward. However, at times he plays on when it is really not on.
Knowing this, the player matched on him should be able to hurt Hird on the rebound, whilst still being able to wear him close the majority of the game. They can afford to run into the 50 to take an uncontested mark and pop up with a few goals, but must immediatley return to his side afterwards. They should be a strong tackler, as they can win a free kick occasionally when Hird attempts to play on.
