Club song over-played at home games

I really feel that our club song is being over-played at the SCG/TS.

Having argued for 'Up There for Sydney' to be banished from the loudspeakers, along with that other (rubbish) version of Cheer cheer, I am still concerned by two things.

    1. The club song gets thrashed after a win in Sydney, being played 4-5 times NON-STOP, virtually from the second the final siren goes.

    2. A sponsor has been given our song to spruke mobile phones.

    Please consider...

On point #1, the tradition of VFL/AFL football is that the club song is usually played a maximum of two times after a win. Following the final siren, the crowd is traditionally given a chance to cheer the win for 5-10 seconds... a sense of anticipation is then created as the fans wait for a few more seconds for the song to be belted out. Following this initial playing, there is another break then the second playing is seen as somewhat of a bonus...

On point #2, Cheer cheer is played at half time very loudly as part of an Optus ad. Now I realise the importance of sponsors, but whoever gave a company the use of our club song for an ad should be shot. Following the entrance of the players, the Notre Dame March should only be heard after a win, and certainly not commercialised to promote mobile phones!!!

To some that have not grown up with the Swans and VFL/AFL culture this may sound like an over-reaction, but the song is sacred to me, and I hate to see it being thrashed like an Australian Idol pop tune by marketing department Johnny-come-lately types.

I guess that some will say "you can never play the song too many times", but I would be interested in your considered thoughts... for me, sometimes less is more.

You know, this has been troubling me for 6.345 years. We must stop the players from singing the song after a win ... it's just too many times for it to be sung after it gets played at the ground. AND even worse, I find that they are playing it at 103.456 decibels instead of the prescribed 105.365. Clearly there's a need to sack someone.

And my phone ring tone is Cheer Cheer and sometimes, I don't answer the phone just 'cos I like to hear the song. And sometimes I play the ring tone, just 'cos I love the Swans (*grinning* as those who were with me on the weekend in Antarctica, the town formerly known as Melbourne, know). And I sing it out loud and I'm tone deaf. And I do it more than twice (in any 5 minute period).

Have you noticed also, how sometimes the cheer squad does the "Sydney clap clap clap" chant 5 times and at other times they do it 6 times. Some times, they even do it SEVEN times! We should get that sorted out too.

While we're at it ... the list could go on.

I said on the weekend that the mob here far prefer a loss because then they can whinge unrestricted. Give us a win and there are still things of vital importance to whinge about as this thread clearly shows.

I'm all for supporting the traditions of the Club ... but I cannot believe that the number of times that the song is played is a TRADITION???!!!??? If so, it's a dumb one.

            Good grief. Get a life.

After we win, I don't care if they stick it on replay and flog it until the next home game.

Don't really mind the optus one as they are only using a short grab of it.

What annoys me though, is the version they play while the sponsors' logos scroll by on the screen before the game - that one is looped to play for about 5-7 minutes!!!!!

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

I was surprised they played it twice in Melbourne but I enjoyed every minute of it. Who cares how many times they play it. I always think it may be the last time I get to sing it for the year and the more it is played the better. Really I think that there are much more important things ie bias against Sydney and Hall, to think and complain about than how many times the song is played!

One thing I notice at Sydney games is the fact that the ground announcer has to get on and start yabbering before they play it.

                  I find that annoying.

Plus, as I alluded to before I think, you just can't hear it from where we are in the Cheer Squad area at the SCG.

Personally after a big win, I WANT to hear it. And want to stand on the seats and sing it at least twice.

But at a boring game, once probably will do I think.

I concur and also agree that at the SCG the song is not loud enough.

As I said, there will be some recent arrivals to our club that have not grown up with the Swans and VFL/AFL culture to whom this may sound like an over-reaction.

... and you can attack me if you want, but that reflects far more on your life than mine.

As per my post... I never said twice is too many, in fact I think that twice is great and even 3 times is ok on some occasions, just not 4-5 times NON-STOP, AND in ads.

I have always found the "more important things to think about" argument weak. Of course there are more important things to think about, like eating and breathing, but that shouldn't stop you from focussing on less important things.

Play it whenever, wherever however whoever, I don't care. Just play the friggin thing, cause when its playing it usually means good times.

Sheesh, what next rules for how long you can hang around after the game enjoying the win, and how far out the car window you can hang the scarf as you drive home.

Nothing better than singing the song as loud as possible, even better if you wake up next morning and your throat hurts more than your head!!!!!

It hasn't been played nearly enough this season at the SCG.

It should of played after the Kangaroos game.

It should of played after the Richmond game.

Umm actually our record at the SCG has not been too bad this year...
