I really feel that our club song is being over-played at the SCG/TS.
Having argued for 'Up There for Sydney' to be banished from the loudspeakers, along with that other (rubbish) version of Cheer cheer, I am still concerned by two things.
1. The club song gets thrashed after a win in Sydney, being played 4-5 times NON-STOP, virtually from the second the final siren goes.
2. A sponsor has been given our song to spruke mobile phones.
Please consider...
On point #1, the tradition of VFL/AFL football is that the club song is usually played a maximum of two times after a win. Following the final siren, the crowd is traditionally given a chance to cheer the win for 5-10 seconds... a sense of anticipation is then created as the fans wait for a few more seconds for the song to be belted out. Following this initial playing, there is another break then the second playing is seen as somewhat of a bonus...
On point #2, Cheer cheer is played at half time very loudly as part of an Optus ad. Now I realise the importance of sponsors, but whoever gave a company the use of our club song for an ad should be shot. Following the entrance of the players, the Notre Dame March should only be heard after a win, and certainly not commercialised to promote mobile phones!!!
To some that have not grown up with the Swans and VFL/AFL culture this may sound like an over-reaction, but the song is sacred to me, and I hate to see it being thrashed like an Australian Idol pop tune by marketing department Johnny-come-lately types.
I guess that some will say "you can never play the song too many times", but I would be interested in your considered thoughts... for me, sometimes less is more.
