    Daily Telegraph disgrace

Once again the daily telegraph has shown its contempt for AFL in Sydney by choosing to put a rehashed, politically motivated old story on NRL and poker machines on the back page instead of the Swans and Barry Halls let off from the tribunal.

FFS, the poker machine tax is good for the community, and ultimately good for the NRL as it will make clubs stand on their own two feet. Its a nothing story.

Well, the Herald has put the Barry Hall story on top of the front page of the sports section (once you wade through the olympic news) 2 days running.

If find it amazing that the NRL can talk about the Gaming Tax increases without their faces going red.

I would be ashamed if my club and code's future relied totally on gaming revenue.

If the Daily Telegraph gets right behind our game this weekend with back page coverage etc, a crowd of 60,000+ would be a certainty. Comon Mr Morrissey push for better coverage of this blockbuster AFL game in Sydney.

I sent an email on Monday to the Tele complaining about their appalling coverage (or lack thereof) of the Swans and the AFL.
Did you notice that there was not even a match report on their website after last weeks great win against the Demons?

Why don't the AFL and the Swans spend a bit of money in full page ad's for the telstra games ? then Maybe the papers will be inclined to spread the AFL gospel a little more fervently.
If you look at it from their POV, they have been ok to us. Why bitch about it ? It wont work!
              Employ them!
PS I think the Telegraph gives us a lot more than the SMH does any way.

FWIW, Sydney are never going to get alot of coverage in the Telegraph for the same reason the Swans get bugger all coverage in the Hun etc.. the majority of the people that read the Daily Terror couldn't give a stuff about the Swans.
As for the Poker machine tax, like it or not this is a league stronghold so only common sense this would be widely reported here, FWIW as far the tax goes the funding to the Football Clubs for the larger clubs won't be a problem, where it will effect is the leagues club money to junior sports etc.
However the clubs that are doing it tough finacially are a different matter, just like the AFL there are the more finacially secure clubs and those not soi finacially secure

I'm actually pretty happy with the coverage we got in today's Terror. We took up the complete inside back page, with our reports BEFORE both the NRL and Wallabies stories. We have managed to at least get one of the headline things on the top back page. Plus there was a huge Cityrail ad explaining transport arrangements for THIS SATURDAY'S MATCH BETWEEN THE SYDNEY SWANS & ESSENDON BOMBERS.

I'm quite chuffed that the Terror chose to publicize our match before the other codes.

Things could be a lot lot worse. You could be a Melbourne Storm fan in Victoria.

                    Have to agree.

We are up against a lot of competition including 8 NRL teams, the Swans generally get a bit of coverage daily and they do manage to hype up most of our bigger games.

The one thing we will never get is big time general AFL coverage - and why would we? Like JF said, the Storm don't get much in the Herald Sun (Which is amazing considering News Ltd own the Storm lol)

General AFL coverage has improved though, the 'Main Game' section of Friday's tele includes a few general AFL stories, plus a Swans story and Roos column.

We need a back page to generate hype.

Look at todays back page of the tele, another nothing article about a washed up drug cheat contemplating retirement.
                      Big Deal!

2nd page in. Gregan beating Campos record

3rd/4th page in. Battle for NRL wooden spoon. Whoopie.

5th page in a decent AFL article. But it should have at least had a snipet on the back page.

Dude you don't pay the big moolahs you get put 10 pages in.

You havr to pay for editorials and for stories and the swans have slashed their marketing expenses by half.

Had Templton still been there you would have seen a bit more hype around the game.

And we'd have been broke. Heard through the grapevine that he totally blew the club expenditure budget out the window by flying upteen people down from PNG for the Kakoda match against Richmond a couple of seasons ago.

Yeah that's why he had to go. Spent too much money or marketing. That's why you don't see many questionnaires as you did a few years ago. Straight outta of the marketing manual was tempo.

Hey the coverage aint bad, we have two pages and its before the rugger.

So not bad at all for a Thursday.

The Olympics are dominating the papers at the moment, none of the football codes are getting much of a look in. It's a shame - with a normal sporting buildup publicity-wise there could have been a crowd of 60,000 on Saturday.
There'll still be a good crowd on Saturday. At least our game pays its way at the gate rather than leaching on gambling addicts.
