First final likely against West Coast at the MCG

Looks like its West Coast at the MCG. Any clues when as I'd like to book flights ASAP.

You would be a silly man to book anything.

If St.Kilda manage a top 2 berth, the final is here in Sydney.

I'd say a day game at the MCG as the interstaters seem to play at night for the Melbourne audience.

It's pretty certain Brisbane and Port will finish top 2.

It will be an absolute disgrace if we have to play a home final in Melbourne.

Agreed. I can't come close to fathoming why it is happening... I understand the contract is in place, but still just can't get my head around the idea.

Ahhh welcome to the wonderful agreement the AFL have with the MCG, in this day and age of a supposedly national competition, it really is a dinosaur of the 80's.

I feel the same. Is there no option for the banking of a final allowing us a home final?

They can, but then they have to make it up again at a later time... of course it could be made up if Victorian teams host games in week 2 of the finals, but that doesn't seem to matter.

The thing that possibly gets me the most is that the banking last year that has caused the deficit was to accomodate the Lions so they could play at the Gabba, it looks like this year Sydney will be forced to play a "home" final at the MCG to make up for this on the same weekend that Brisbane play a final at the Gabba again...

What keeps annoying me is that all the media keep referring to possibility of a HOME final.

If it's not at Stad OZ, then it ain't a home final, morons!
At best it's a final on neutral turf (if we play the WCE there).

The only positive would be that we get a warm up run on the MCG for Grand Final day.

I'd prefer SCG or Telstra to Subiaco but if it's a choice between Subiaco and the MCG then I'll take the gay dame at the MCG any day.

There is, but they're not going to use it.
The AFL banked a final last year (and rightly so), but that doesn't have to be repaid till next year. There's no reason for shafting the Swans this year. And with 10 out of 16 teams coming from Victoria, under any balance of probability, the MCG finals would go into credit by natural means over any long-term scenario.
The fact that the AFL's in such a hurry to repay the banked final is bad news for the struggling Victorian clubs. The only logical explanation is that the AFL doesn't see a 10/16 Victorian balance being maintained, or they believe the current over-representation by non-Victorian clubs is structural rather than cyclical.

The days of a final at the SCG are gone.
