    benny mathews,what a log!

    230 kicks (third in club),104 marks(fourth),197 handballs received (third),180 handballs received (first),89 tackles (second).......etc.
And yet the loonies still want him out!!Did i read some clown saying that his possessions were 'wasted'?Yep, when you get so many I guess you can stuff a couple.Did I read that he is 'slow in decisions'?Ever looked at his options and the value of his intelligent holding up play?Did I someone suggests he get's the 'easy ball' as he is loose and not tight enough on his man?Maybe you don't understand the art of being an aggressive defender that happens to read the play.
ever looked at his defense on star on-ballers?ever looked at his brilliant kicks to BBBH?ever looked at the decisive tackling and the 1% that don't get counted?
For me, he is in the top 6 players for our team and will be close to MVP for 2004.
Just my opinion of course, but i think statistics are pretty compelling.

He's also one of the sexiest men in the team. If I may be so superficial.

The quiet acheiver, I am happy that he hasn't built a profile, that allows him to get under the guard of opposition teams.

He is not like Willo, Leapin Leo, that command oppisition players attention to a great extent.

Quiet Achiever is correct, he just seems to rack up the possessions without being noticed, he also cleans up a lot when coming out of defence, after a number of handballs he will more often than not be in there somewhere.

Those ridiculous stats have convinced me to have him in my team at the expense of a similar player such as Chris Johnson !!

Pity there isn't a stat for " stupid time wasting decisions that cost the team through holding up play for 1 min and 45 seconds while the opposition mans up on the Swans " or " run over the boundary line when in doubt " as Matthews would be leading both by not a street, grid, suburb and city but COUNTRY.

It's a pity there was never a stat for short passes with the instruction to give the ball back immediately followed by handballs to teammates under the pump.
We all dream of a team of BLTs!

He is a tough player with an instinct for getting the ball but I believe he and Crouch turn it over too much and sometimes can be guilty of just kicking it anywhere or kicking it short to a contest. But they both play their roles.

I assume the original post was aimed at me amongst others, so here goes.

It's easy to overshoot on the positivity after a great win, but I'm going to remain objective - because it's something I value.

I've been watching Mathews closely since the reaction against my rating of him in my 'List Analysis' thread, and the more I do, the less inclined I am to change my original opinion.

Mathews is just another player - his role is largely unaccountable, he is a receiver, and his disposal is average.

                          Q. Why does he get so much of the ball?
                          A. Because he's there. (Hb\Wing without a man).

If Fosdike (or Daniel MacPherson for that matter ) played the same role - he'd do as well.

I don't dislike Mathews (honest ), but he's a peripheral player and would be in most teams in the league. I expect that in the medium term, he will be displaced in our starting 22, by McVeigh, Buchanon, Bevan and Fixter - or Willoughby, Schmidt, Dempster, Thewlis etal - even Ablett.

Will you reassess your objective view if (when) Mathews registers yet another top 10 finish in the club B&F at the end of this month?

I agree with you midaro. I have no problem with Mathews being in our top 18 at the present but he is wasted in our midfield as he is uncreative in attack. Can you imagine someone like Akermanis in our team playing the position Mathews does? We need someone playing on the wing who can create scoring opportunities and also demand a man to cover him for the entire game to take some pressure off the on ballers. It also seems Goodes new role in the squad has made Mathews somewhat expendible.
