Interesting stats re round 22 finishes

If the following questions came up in a trivia night, would you get them right?

Name the team or teams that have not had a bottom four finish in the last 10 seasons (1995 - 2004).

Name the team or teams that have not finished a home and away season with a percentage of 100 or below in the last 10 seasons (1995 - 2004).

Pretty sure that there are two clubs who fit into the first category - the Cats and the Swans. I think everyone else has finished bottom 4 at least once, albeit the Lions and Bombers only once each.

Don't have a clue about the second but I wouldn't be surprised if you told us this applied to the Swans as well.

If you only take into consideration the sixteen teams that have competed since 1997, the only teams that have not finished in the bottom four in that time are Geelong and Sydney, as Liz correctly stated. The lowest that both sides have finished in that time is 12th - Geelong in 1998, 2001 and 2003 and Sydney in 1995.

Liz is also correct on the second question. The Swans are the only side in the past ten years that has not finished with a percentage of 100 or below in that time. Of course, the answer is pretty obvious when you consider I posted this in the Swans section of the forums and not the general section.

The answer to the question is complicated by the fact that there are technically 18 teams involved, including Fitzroy and the Brisbane Bears, and Port only competed in eight of the ten seasons.

The Bears made the finals in '95 and '96, so they didn't have a bottom-four finish, however in '95 their percentage was below 100 after round 22 (they made the finals with only 10 wins IIRC). Fitzroy collected the spoon in both years.

The 10-year period coincides with Fremantle's first 10 years in the competition. During that time, the Dockers finished in the bottom four six times, the most of any club.

Port Adelaide have been in the competition eight years and they have finished in the bottom four once.

So what's the point of this? It shows that for the last ten years, the Swans have been consistently competitive each season. In the last ten years, we've made the finals seven times. That's more times than the previous fifty years.
