    Troy Simmonds

Well reading the newspaper over here in the west early sunday morning i was reading that we (apparently) are showing some intrest in dockers versatile ruckman and forward troy simmonds, since i am a dockers member , i have pretty much seen all there games apart from when there games have collided with swans games, and i rate him very highly, he is a good consistent forward unlike medhurst and i feel he could be used in the ruck along with doyle, for ball is constantly aging and becoming more prone to injuries, while goodes is well lets just say unpredictable, i dont think our forward lines needs that much of a boost but hey we could still use him, so what do you swannies reckon would this mammoth form the west be a good draft or a complete waste of money

I think he'd be a great pickup. Not sure what we'd need to give up to get him.

Combine [say] him, with Cameron Bruce, and some close-in midfielder, and our team will definitely look better next year.

hasn't he got a dodgy knee and this is the reason Freo don't use him at the centre bounce?

Um... just to clarify, are we all ok with disregarding the draft this year and aiming at established players? Seems we better be, if we're targeting Simmonds, Bruce and McVeigh whilst describing most of our list as 'required players'.

          Apart from Ned, of course.

Yep - I think we should trade away every single draft pick this year. We can afford to have one year without any new youngsters - we currently have a number of them in progress.

Except that we have to take three players (minimum) in the draft.

                  Yep.
We have to 'lose' three players before the draft as is.
If we have a net gain of players over trade week, that increases and becomes all the more difficult.

And the reason why 3 have to be taken? If few teams traded and didn't draft, interest would soon wane with junior footballers and in a few years the quality of the draft would drop away dramatically through lack of numbers.
Simply you must recruit youth as StKilda has shown, even though most of theirs were high draft picks.

Fine - then we trade the good picks and keep 3 of the back-end picks (which are often next to worthless for trading anyway).

It would be very tricky to trade away all our draft picks.

As Liz says, we have to have at least three spaces on our list going into the draft, and take at least three picks in the National Draft.

So, in addition to freeing up the three spaces for the draft picks we plan to trade (say three picks?), we'd also have to delist the number equivalent to the players we gained in the trade (maybe three more players?).

Who would like to nominate six players who deserve to be delisted?

One way to reduce the impact would be to delist players with the intention of picking them again in the draft (like we did with Buchanan last year). However, because we wouldn't get a pick until round four (or later), this runs the risk that a player might get picked up by another club.

A better option is usually to trade player for player . . . but obviously that is easier said than done.

I haven't seen any evidence that recruiting youth brings success? Especially since this usually requires sitting at the bottom of the table for several years to bag early draft picks.

As far as I can see, any club that hangs its future on a youth policy doesn't succeed until it eventually compromises by mixing in some mature players to hold it all together.

St Kilda has a team of young champions (from first round picks), but their window of opportunity will only last for two or three seasons, until Peckett, Harvey, Thompson and Gehrig have gone, and until the club is torn apart by salary-cap pressures. It will be interesting to see if they can grab a premiership before that happens!

And, while I'm talking to myself, I'll add that I'd be delighted if we recruited Troy Simmonds. He's a very classy, and versatile, big man.

He and Doyle would make a formidable combo of ruckmen who can kick goals.

It dosent make sense to me, He wanted to come home hes home hes getting a game and seems to have no porbs with team and team mates and coaching staff. Why would he want to leave but if hes game we should be very interested is a top ruckman/forward with a great leap (jeff white) has come on very strongly since playing for the Dockers.
