Maybe not, but media relations are a vital part of modern football. A captain who cannot formulate a coherent sentence is not going to help anyone. A captain needs to be a stateman for the game, as well as a leader on the field, particularly in the crowded Sydney football market. I doubt Hall's capacity as a statesman. I just don't wish our choice of captain to perpetuate the myth that all footballers, and all football fans, are unintelligent meat-heads. Not that this neccessarily describes Barry Hall, but the media tends to present him that way. I doubt awarding him captaincy is going to greatly change the way the media treats him.

If not Kennelly, and I grant that his accent may be a difficulty with media committments, I think another equally well-spoken ought to be given a shot. Barry Hall, at least in my opinion, is not terribly well-spoken.

Oh, and for those who may claim I'm only interested in a pretty-boy captain, I don't actually find Tadhg that good looking. Certainly he's my favourite, but Sean Dempster is far more attractive.

Some players speak better than others that's a fact. If you go back to when Kel and Stu first became Captain, I think we had a couple more potatoes in the pantry. Not sure baz should miss out for that sort of reasoning.

My idea of a captain starts and finishes with the on field stuff.

If the team are failing in that dept than the media are likely to drop off anyway regardless of who's captain, what he looks like, or how well spoken he is.

IMO the captain should be the person you'd most like to have next to you in battle. The person when everything seems lost, digs deeper. The person who'd take a bullet for his team mates, and the person who will always lead by example.

Someone who makes his team feel ten feet high and bullet proof.

Actually, yes, and a mate of mine helped interviewed him for Totally Wild. He said that Barry Hall wasn't the greatest interview subject. Don't get me wrong: I like Barry Hall as much as the next Swans fan. I just doubt he has the qualities required to be a good captain, both on and off the field.

I thought that "totally wild" was some kind of kids animal/science type of show - its not about footy!. So it was probably a bit odd for him - I have also heard that he is rather shy.

I find that Stuey is hard to understand sometimes.

Barry Hall has matured so much since coming up here, alot like Plugger did and he gives it his all - I know that I would rather a captain who, as was previously said, would be there in battle and give it his all, than one who recited Shakespear during an interview, just to look good. They are footy players afterall, not poets.

And whilst Shane Crawford is great with the media, dont forget he has had acting classes and appears on the Eddie show all the time - perhaps he should have put a bit more of that time into his footy???

For me, the captain has to lead by example on the field, not necessarily be the best player and be there for every single player in the team, congratulating a player when he does something well, encouraging a player when everything isn't going right. He should also be approachable by all facets of the club, whenever he is down there.

I believe that there is more than one player at the Swans who exhibit the qualities necessary for a captain: Hall, Kirk, Crouch, Williams, Tadhg, O'Loughlin, Barry, Ball and of course Maxfield. That's why we have a leadership team. As for one to be the captain (if Maxfield does not want it any more), I'd go for either Kirk, Hall or Crouch, with all of the others mentioned working in the leadership group.

As for the media, I believe a captain should focus more on getting the team to a premiership, as opposed to whether or not he is the most media friendly.

I think that Barry H is all the things that everyone has said above. I think he is fast becoming a superstar of the game, an 'elite' player if you will. I dont think he should be captain, and I really cannot imagine him even wanting it. He has enough on his plate each and every week without that added responsibility. I think that someone can lead without being the captain and think that the leadership group does a splendid job. Give the official captaincy duties to someone who's every move is not already scrutinised by the media (Kirk, Leo, Crouch, Goodes(?), any of them would do a good job). BBBH does not need the added attention. We also don't want the Swans to just equal the face of Barry Hall.

As for Ruda's comment that you need someone to take a bullet for you to be captain. When the opposition fans start shooting at us, then I'll know that we have truly made it
