Troy Luff Medal - rounds 7 and 8

Welcome to the fourth instalment of the 2004 Troy Luff Medal count! Tonight, we will cover rounds seven and eight, against Richmond and West Coast respectively. Of course, these games have few good memories for a Swans fan to look back on, so I?ll put off writing about them for a few moments, and repeat the leaderboard as at round six:

    21 votes ? Barry Hall
    10 ? Brett Kirk
8 ? Adam Goodes, Paul Williams
    7 ? Jared Crouch
5 ? Leo Barry, Nick Davis, Heath James, Ben Mathews
4 ? Paul Bevan, Tadhg Kennelly

Round seven was perhaps the lowest ebb of season 2004, when the Swans lost at home to eventual wooden spooners Richmond. It was a game dominated by a single player, who unfortunately wore the yellow and black. Matthew Richardson proved far too much for the Swans defence, kicking seven of the team?s ten goals. The Swans forward line made the best of limited supply from the midfield, but could still only manage eight goals for the match. Youngsters Paul Bevan and Amon Buchanan, and Ryan O?Keefe playing his 50th match, were amongst the few good news stories of the week. The Tigers won by 13 points.

    The votes:
    5 ? Ryan O?Keefe
    4 ? Paul Williams
    3 ? Barry Hall
    2 ? Paul Bevan
    1 ? Amon Buchanan

Congratulations to the five players, particularly Amon Buchanan on his first ever Troy Luff Medal vote.

With the embarrassing loss to Richmond coming on the back of successive losses to Melbourne and Essendon, the Swans win-loss ratio slipped to 3-4. In need of a win, the Swans faced one of the hardest road trips in football; flying to Subiaco to play the Eagles. A difficult task was made even harder when news got out on the day of the match that Eagles legend Glen Jakovich would retire after the match. The Swans faced a pumped-up team on their home turf.

One source of concern early in the year was the form of Adam Goodes at full-forward. In response, Paul Roos moved him back into the ruck for the game against West Coast. It was the position he had won the Brownlow in the year before, and the decision was theoretically sound. It would have severe consequences however. Goodes crashed into the West Coast ruckman at the opening bounce, injuring his knee and watching the rest of the game from the sidelines.

It was a game in which the Swans were never quite able to reel the Eagles in, once they fell behind in the first half. It was a much better performance than the week before, but the Swans were outclassed on the wide expanses of Subiaco, and couldn?t contain Eagles forwards Jakovich and Phil Matera. At the other end, Barry Hall kicked five goals, and Paul Williams had 26 touches.

    The votes:
    5 ? Barry Hall
    4 ? Brett Kirk
    3 ? Ben Mathews
    2 ? Paul Williams
    1 ? Jason Ball

So after another two rounds, Barry Hall continues to push further and further ahead. With seven consecutive polling weeks, he has established a massive lead of 15 votes, more than twice the tally of his nearest challengers, Brett Kirk and Paul Williams.

    The leaderboard:
    29 ? Barry Hall
14 ? Brett Kirk, Paul Williams
8 ? Adam Goodes, Ben Mathews, Ryan O?Keefe
    7 ? Jared Crouch
    6 ? Paul Bevan
5 ? Leo Barry, Nick Davis Heath James

Join me tomorrow night, when we review rounds nine and ten. Can anybody catch Barry Hall? They better start soon.

I had forgotten how poor a start to the season we had. Thanks for the reminder Charlie.
