It's one guy's view. He's allowed to dislike AFL, just as I can't stand rugby league. There are probably even some people in the southern states that don't like AFL either.
Also, it's not like any of his comments provide any real insight into why he doesn't like the game. They are just throw-away lines designed to amuse anyone who happens also not to like AFL.
PS I thought we'd all agreed to abide by Des' request not to reproduce full text of articles on this site. Just because people get away with it on BF doesn't mean it makes it right to do it here. -
People on Big Footy I presume aren't held accountable by the Swans for abusing their copy & paste function
He seems to know a fair bit about the game for someone who hates it, but I'd say it's more light hearted and tongue in cheek.
You know what they say about 'any publicity'....
have to agree with the comment on the theme songs.
They are pretty bad.
Quite embarrassing really.
Sadly, society has in some way reached a point where the status quo and history is more important than progress.
Modernise people.
Change the lyrics, update the sound, whatever.....
Love to see him mention the BBBH comment face to face lolThe difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.Comment

i soooooo disagree about what is said here about theme songs. AFL theme songs are fan-bloody-tastic.
cheer cheer vs show 'em sydney or kick on???
no competition there.
then there are some crackers for other teams being tigerland, and a few other unmentionables, but are good songs nonetheless.
why this penchant for updating everything? go to a baseball or softball game here in north america and at the 7th inning stretch, out comes "take me out to the ballgame...." (5 inning for softball, kids).
its a classic. it bridges generations together. nothing like learning the theme song from a loved one.
AFL THEME SONGS TO STAY!!!!! (just start serving decent ****ing food at the football. thats what needs updating!!)
rant over

Newcastle isn't exactly an afl haven, so not suprising he bagged the game.
I tend to agree with the club songs too, Esp the Port one.
And no offence inteneded to the people who work hard to make the banners, but I have always thought the same about banners, all that effort for a few minutes before it is ripped to shreds.
I think Eddie was Pres, before he became Millionaire host(?)..

ports theme song is one of the "new" theme songs in the league. whats why its so ****ing terrible. same can be said for WCE and Freo.
afterall, ports original theme song is none other than:
"CHEER CHEER"

I might also add that there's a certain mentality up in Newcastle that is very parochial and narrow minded, and this article reflects that type of attitude.
They've spent to much time down in coal mines and not taken much notice of the rest of the world. A lot of Novacastrians are born, live and die there and dont ever venture any further than Port Stephens to the north (to stay at their favourite holiday park where they have always stayed every summer) or Sydney to the south (which they love to hate and think that its full of "pooftas, @@@@ and bloody Asians"). My apologies to any Novacastrian reading this that doesn't fit this generalised image but I'm sure you know the type of person I'm talking about.Occupational hazards:

What would've been great is for the journalist to comment on the game of AFL football, not just cast subjective derision on a few "celebrities" who most AFL fans thinks are idiots anyway.
Let's forget about the banners and theme songs (every sport has it's idiosyncracities) and talk about the athleticism, skill, pace and sheer entertainment of the game.
Perhaps the journo might take a trip to Sydney to watch a game live and experience the atmosphere of a game attended on a regular basis by >30,000 fans and not just wait for the Rugby League State of Origin when the RL "fans" actually drag their thickset asses to the game.Comment

The problem is that all the League trogladites up there will take the article as gospel.
Maybe he's just put out cause the p*ssweak Knights couldn't make the finals and Andrew Johns has just about had his day."My theory is that the universe is made out of stupidity because it's more plentiful than hydrogen" - Frank ZappaComment

Lighten up y'all
Can't take anything seriously when someone from Newcastle, the most boring place on earth, say "They need to get a life", when the only thing going on in that town is the Knights!
The one thing that does make me laugh though - I see all these Northern State League fans and Journos continually making comment on AFL, but in the AFL states, rarely a comment, positive or negative is made about League.
Guess it is clear which code is running scared!!Comment

the songs are one of the best things about football, and the Port song is GREAT too. not too keen on the dockers song though - that needs an overhaul.
good songs is one of the many things rugby league only wishes it had. they're simply jealous of a game with a far richer traditions, history and popularity."As a player he simply should not have been able to do the things he did. Leo was a 185cm, 88kg full-back and played on some of the biggest, fastest and best full-forwards of all time, and constantly beat them." Roos.
