Newcastle may be a strongly parochial city but cities like that tend to be- just look at a city like Liverpool and you'll see what I mean.

As far as sports go, it not only supports the Knights but is also one of the country's traditional soccer strongholds (along with Wollongong) and I think all the codes are keenly taken up there as they all have established competitions. The local Aussie Rules comp, known as the Black Diamond league, posseses the oldest trophy still contested in Australia!
