me, personally am not going to lay off rowan... he is a professional footballer, money from my family goes towards his salary and frankly im sick of his lack of skill and football brain... if about 3/4 of the people on this forum trained as much as what warfe does im sure we could all play better than him

Steve, that was a good summary of what the game plan is, however my question to you was that how does warfe fit into that gameplan when he obviously lacks skill and speed? not what the actual gameplan is...

Steve did answer it - "Answering the direct question first, Warfe fits into this game plan as he is a hard-running defender who can get into space and make an option."

As for whether anyone here can play better than Warfe, that is completely irrelevant. Still, I don't think he's as hopeless as most say, and he's always been in the side due to his ability to assist with the run from defence and as an extra tall option.

Melanie, then I assume you've given up bagging all the players yourself? I seem to recall instances where you were critical of some players - or is it one rule for the players you like and another for the players you don't like?

I see nothing wrong with being critical of a player's performance. Playing football is these guys' job - and if they can't perform, then they need to be looked at. I don't see any posts in here criticising Rowan as a person, do you?

FWIW I quite like Warfie - he was one of my favoured tough-nut backline - Seymour/Dunkley/Warfe. He needs to stand up and be counted though - we're getting past the point where pure guts and enthusiasm can cover a basic lack of skill.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

I know we all like to blame someone after a loss, but heaping abuse on Warfe, Barry or whoever ignores the fact (and I emphasise the word 'fact') that the defensive unit is the only thing that has held the Swans together for the past two years (or more).

The fact is that even though Freo's midfield mutilated the Swans' onballers, Freo still only managed 12 goals. The fact that we got beat was due to a fumbling midfield and some appalling kicking for goal. The defence, including Warfe and Barry, did their job. It might not have been pretty, but it worked.

And if you look back over the past few seasons you'll see the same pattern of the backs doing their job, but the team just not being able to kick enough goals to win.

That's an interesting point cliff. Certainly the defence comes in for a bit of stick because we remember moments like Medhurst holding off Leo Barry, and the Freo forwards seemingly able to find space at will. It's all really down to the midfield - if they have an off-day, the forwards don't get the ball delivered properly and the defence is up against it because there's no pressure on the opposition midfield.

Yet when the team is on top the defence is forgotten as all the glory is on Barry Hall and the rest of the goalkickers.

That's always the problem I think, Des. When a defender makes a mistake, the opposition scores and the moment is burned into every supporter's brain.

But looked at unemotionally, Barry had more possessions than Medhurst, and neutralised him for most of the game.

With Croad out, and Pavlich playing around the ground, Medhurst and Farmer were the Dockers' key forwards. However you look at it, kicking four goals between them is not a 'dominating' performance, and I doubt if Warfe and Barry will be losing any sleep over it.

Good points, and actually my concern before the game, as I commented here, was that our forward line looked great, but if they did not get the opportunities they would not be much good. This was partly right. Partly also because they missed gettable opportunities.

(ps: what's this Americanism 'got beat'...?)

That is my point exactly. You've bagged a player, yet you don't like others criticising the ones you like?

A bit of consistent umpiring is all I'm after. If someone has an opinion you don't like, then either respond with a reasoned argument as to why you don't like the opinion, or simply just ignore it! You're allowed your opinion on Swans matters, but so does everyone else.

ACtually everyone, apologies, I've dragged this a bit off-topic.. errrr.... as you were then.
