    Doyle

Everyone's talking about Jolly , but i reckon 2005 is Doyles big chance.
A couple of years ago he was showing some real ability at taking a mrk in the Foward line, and his boot looked pretty true.
His marking prowess has dropped off a little at the beginning of last year, but if he gets his form back in the forward line - Watch out !!

I do. Having less pressure to be a quality no 2 ruckman when we were faultering so badly at clearances might see him improve drastically.

Yes it's funny how expectation can have different effects on young players. Some respond well to it.

Will Doyle be in our first 22?
            Ruck options:
            1. Ball
            2. Jolly
            3. Doyle
+ Goodes, (hopefully LRT might come up - though I doubt it)

...surely, they can't all play in the same team.

Easy, one of Doyle/Ball/Jolly to start in the ruck, the other resting down forward and the third one sitting on the bench. Goodes to play more of a midfield role, rather than a ruck role and LRT to play CHB.

I noticed in the recent article on Jolly that he wants to play ruck but is also keen for playing forward- does anyone know whether Doyle actually wants to play ruck over forward?
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Good Point. I think Midaro is correct the more ruckmen you have in a team the less grass burners etc.

For the hypothetical team below (which includes the ruckmen as robbieando suggests . . .

                  Crouch Schauble Bolton
                  Barry LRT Kennelly
                  Mathews Williams McVeigh
                  N Davis Hall O'Keefe
                  Schneider O'loughlan Ball

                  Jolly Bolton Kirk

                  Goodes Maxfield Doyle Fosdike

Leaving aside whether you prefer Ablett to Fosdike or Buchanan to Schneider or whatever.
As you can see in order to include all this height you have to exclude several running players with first grade experience including Nicks, Saddington, Bevan, Buchanan, Fixter, Ablett and Spriggs.

Let alone the youngsters. The forward line possibly also looks a little slow. So I suspect that we will never play 3 ruckman or if we do we'll run severly short of running power.

...there's also the issue that just plonking 200cm of man-meat in the goal square may be more of a hinderance than a boost - our forward line hasn't been the problem.

Our problem has been the midfield - only one ruckman can tap at a time, so having an extra one in the team just slows us down overall.

IMO only two of the beanpoles will get a game at the same time.

Then again, injuries do occur with Ruckman from time to time, particularly with Donkey Doyle....

And don't be suprised, if Doyle & Jolly & Goodes & maybe Erikson, are all playing well in the Ruck or in key positions accross the Forward line, that Jason Ball retires mid-season !!

In regard to that team, you might as well re-jig the starting 18 as you have Goodesy on the David Dench.... Brownlows don't start on the bench, particularly when they are 24 and can play in a variety of positions !!

Actually it raises a point, where do we play Goodes?
However as you point out he's a Brownlow winning All Australian ruckman, howvere we are told will never ruck again.

He's a very very loose goose when playing in defence and he get's a terrible case of the yips whenever he takes a set shot at goal.

While he was probably the most mobile ruckman of all time I'm not sure how he'll go as an onballer. The mobility was in comparison to things like King, Everitt and Primus not Stevens, Judd and Riccuito.

So what do we do with him?
Frankly I don't know, but I'd love to hear the hypotheses.

Wing. Same height and, dare I say, ability as the great Keith Greig. As we all know, Greig was a champion wingman at the Roos for many years before ending his career at Half-Back.

                          If not Wing, then Ruck-Rover.

So is Chad Cornes, but it didn't stop him being named AA CHB.

Bear in mind that we watched Goodes play that position last year with his mobility shot due to his knees. Get his body back in order and give him some more experience down there so that he can read the play a bit better (which is how Cornes gets away with playing so loose) and he may turn into a pretty potent weapon there.

Of course, maybe he won't, but his versatility means that he can probably play a number of roles, depending of where Roos thinks he can best create a mismatch.

I doubt that we've seen the last of him rucking - maybe not at centre bounces but I think he'll do stints as an 'around-the-ground ruckman' which is where he is most devastating. It's a role that Roos himself used to play on occasion, with very damaging results. Anyone remember that round 8 (or maybe it was round 7) 1995 when we smashed the previously unbeaten Blues on a Friday night at the SCG? One of Barassi's masterstrokes that night was the use of Roos as a mobile ruckman, and it completely baffled Carlton.

I want to see goodes at his most damaging position and that is in the middle (rover/Ruck Rover/ruck)....we have to make the most of his unique ability.
