We should play every match to win, regardless of whether its the Grand Final or a first round match in the Wizard Cup. However I think the Pre Season matches are important to give our young kids game time in the "seniors", try out players in new positions and give the players in the Best 22 match fitness. So if we put in a very young side like this year then fine, but we still play to win and we certainly don't risk players.
    Once was, now elsewhere

I think they need a couple of veteren type players in the mix, just to play the on field generals and to keep the younger guys in line with team orders.
One of the problems with playing "all" young guns, is that they start to play "agiants" each other , or compete with each other, instead of againts the opposition.
So I would be happy with this team with say craig bolton in the back line, say Kirky in the center, and maybe pebbles up front-

try to win the wizard cup
why try to lose any game
even if u play youth ur trying to win
surely the side must believe any combination off the playing list can win a game of footy
Theres not much left to say

There is a difference between trying to win games by the team you pick, and then trying to win games once out on the field.

If you only looked at one week at a time, there would be occasions when you would pick a player that is half-fit because you want to win this one game, even in it puts that player at serious risk of missing future games, regardless of which games are more important.

To this end, of course the team picked for the match should aim to win the game, but this is different to picking the best available side for the wizard cup matches. It is more important during the preseason to try things out and play some fringe players, regardless of the result, than aim to win by picking all the best players.

The other aspect is playing "Best 22" players in positions they do not usually play or need work on. i.e. Giving Goodes a full pre-season at CHB. Giving Bucky Ball and Schneides more experience on-ball, moving Tadgh further up the field, getting the Hyphen more experience - somewhere!, anywhere! on the field... etc...

Plus add in lots of game time for the previously injured, fringe and second year players and some exposure for the rookies, try out some different tactics and all is great.

Pre-season should not be a competition, it should be four or more scheduled games. The idea of a pre-season cup is silly and meaningless. Don't forget the tinkering with the rules that happens as well - makes it even more pointless.

One rule I would love to see happen in pre-season competition is a bigger bench to allow more exposure for the players. Having only four turns it into an attrition event much like the regular season which is unnecessary in pre-season.

Isnt the bench already extended to 6 players?

If a team stays in the Wizard Cup they at least get to play on decent grounds. Losing means relegation to the country circuit and often entails playing on sub-standard dangerous grounds. This is particularly so for the Melbourne teams. I hope the Swans play a half reasonable team for the first round as I would like to win against Rodney Eade and I would like to win in Melbourne - to get into the habit of winning in Melbourne.

There is no such thing as a substandard dangerous ground for AFL players anymore, you have to go back twenty years for that, these guys are sooks, **** we used to play in knee high mud.

It might be, I hope so! I can not remember - just going by the team list someone put up with four reserves.

Did you used to play at Gore Hill Oval? Nothing like running through mud and then you realise your boot came off a few steps ago...

What about the Swans training ground outside the SCG?

Iv'e had a kick on it it's fine, the Swans are sooks just like all proof sports people these days.
The thing about that ground is that it gets used by soccor players all the time.
The Swans need to buy it and keep it as a sacred ground for the great game.
I am sick of sharing in Sydney, when are the Swans going to get their own turf ???

We've got to win the first round this year so that I can get to see my boys play at York Park in Launceston in the second round. It is so hard for me to get to more than one game a year this scenario would be an absolute bonus. How selfish am I,not thinking long term, it's all just about me,me,me?

You want them to win so that you get to see them play the following week in Launceston.

Cliff wouldn't mind if they lost so that he gets to see them the following week in Morwell.
