Hypothetical line Up for Wizard Cup

In light of the excellent list of rookies we have drafted and a long list of injuries, I was wondering what our Wizard Cup line up would look like.

For me it was a bit of a gaze into the future, however, based on the players listed below being unavailable due to injury or rehabilitation, under this list is my line up for the Wizard Cup.

It looks a bit stronger than some of the squads we have put together, thanks to our utilisation of the rookie draft.

James @ CHF would be interesting to see. Could be good for his confidence.

is he a bit slow for CHF? i don't actually know how quick he is off the mark, which would seem to me to be a prime consideration for a CHF.

However, given that it's the wiz cup, might be worth a try....

i think thats a pretty good side for a wizard cup - could be interesting. we play the bulldogs first up - should be able to beat them right?
And the man who started it, the Schneiderman, can kick his third for the quarter. And the swans are in the Grand Final!

Speed off the mark is probably more critical for a FF than a CHF.

To be a good CHF I suspect you either need to be a strong bullocking type that can crash packs- ala Jon Brown, Wayne Carey - or exceptionally mobile, particularly laterally so - ala Nick Riewoldt. Or a little bit of both - ala Barry Hall.

I doubt James is either of those, at least compared to others at the elite level.

He has played a lot for the reserves as a key marking forward - probably more in an FF role than a CHF role. He's probably a player who could pinch hit as a key marking forward if we needed one, but I suspect at AFL level he would be more suited to the kind of role that Saddo was playing before he did his knee.

I think it is more likely that he will find his AFL-level niche in the backline, if anywhere.

We will go into this game as rank outsiders.

This is based on Roos attitude to the Wizard Cup, he has no interest other than getting the side ready for round 1.

The Bulldogs will be atleast 4 weeks ahead of us in their schedule, have everyone training and Eade (wanting to start off well to build confidence) has already stated it will be a full strength line-up for the game.

It is going to be great to get along to the match to watch the kids go around. but would be absolutely shocked if we got within 10 goals on the day.

sure your right. but in the end i think its more important that the club is ready for round 1 and ready for the riggors of the AFL.

i dont know - we could get within 10, i hope they do! would be great confidence for the younger ones.

There is a fair amount of variability in CHF at AFL level, but I cannot think of one good CHF who wasn't an outstanding overhead mark. I'm not sure that James will ever fit that bill.

Yeah? I would have said that overhead marking was one of James' strengths. He pulled off three absolute beauties in his debut!

Actually, while we're on the subject of James, I've been reviewing the games he played last year, and I can't for the life of me remember why he got dropped? He did make the odd clanger, but almost exclusively in the forward line. His defensive play was mostly pretty good, especially considering his inexperience. He got touched up a bit by Neitz, but plenty of good defenders have copped a hiding from him.

Did he get injured or something?

It's a game not easily forgotten...

Last game Lockett played at the SCG (other than his comeback season). 1999 r21 against the Crows. We smashed them by over 100 pts. He took one on the defensive goal line and another couple around the ground. One grab, sure hands, Dunkleyesque. Poetry in motion.

He became a bit of a favourite of mine that day.

It really seemed to be the Neitz game (which seems bizarre to me). The following week was Essendon and I think he had 8 min.

He and Rogers were both listed as having minor injuries the same week and they both got dropped. James' was an ankle I think. But it couldn't have been too bad because I think he played for the reserves the following week.

I agree with NMW - the Neitz game seemed to be the issue. But Dunks had his pants pulled down a few times by Neitz over his career so there must have been slightly more to it than that.

                              Agree it seems strange.
