The inclusion of Campbell but not Vogels suggests that Campbell is heading the race to be the 'designated rookie' who can play senior football regardless of injuries.

Makes sense from the point of view of
- where you'd expect each of the rookies to be in their development and
- that the taller options in the back half are less established than those in the forward line

even if his early season form hasn't stood out as much as Vogels.

Also interesting that Moore has been excluded, which suggests they are in no hurry to play him in the senior team despite what he has shown thus far.

Didn't Roos say somewhere that Davis was due to return next week in Newcastle?

That would give him next week and a run in Canberra the week before the start of the season.

Robert Shaw on SEN1116 said this week that 2 wizzer or practice games were all that was needed for a player to be ready physically to play round 1.

That leaves the following senior group that has not played yet:

Of those O'Loughlin, Goodes & Davis all seem to be on track for round 1.

Therefore likely round 1 line-up is looking like this:

I'm not surprised to see Campbell in there. In comparison with the others, he looks much more physically ready for senior football. I was also very impressed with his kicking at the Brisbane match. He's a very long kick.

We still need to find another big backman and Campbell may be just the guy who can fill a role.

You "reckon"?

Spriggs will be in for round 1, but Buchanan will be relying on injuries to make the first 22.

And I'd be willing to bet my hard-earned on Jolly playing round 1, barring injury. It certainly won't come down to a choice between Jolly and Nicks.

They didn't recruit Spriggs and Jolly not to play them, at least in the early rounds. Stevie will also be in the first 22.

Oh YES! We need more players that can deliver long kicks into the forward line for Bazza to mark. IIRC, last year the Swans were ranked last in long kicks. If we can get the players we need to develop a long kicking game that gives plenty of chances for Bazza and his minions to mark, we will finally be a good chance for a flag.

Let's get back to basics here. Champion teams win premierships by outscoring the opposition. The more times we enter F50 the higher the score we kick. We have done well to make the most of our opportunities, but with a long kicking game we can get more opportunities.

I personally wouldn't go with Spriggs on what I've seen and heard.He starts in a blaze of glory but his disposal lets him down.I would rather see Buchanan in the starting 18 and the spiderman on the bench.IMO Spriggs hasn't shown enough yet but he is quick and there is room for improvement.

Spriggs looked really slow in alot of occassions against the brions.

Bias aside, bucky has done enough in the pre season to be ahead of spriggs. He has more of that X-Factor (ala pull something out of his arse) that we need if the game gets close.

I don't think Spriggs and Buchanan are substitutes for each other. One is fit, speedy outside player who can run all day (with or without skill limitations - I don't want to judge until we've had a decent chance to observe him).

The other is a moderately paced, not exceptionally fit but very clever and creative player. He won't contribute for 100mins but what he does do will probably be valuable.

Since they have such different attributes, it will be team balance that dictates which gets a guernsey if it comes down to a choice between the two.

Teams win Premierships by kicking accurately. Although we may not get it in there 100 times a Qtr like you may want, generally it is quality ball when it does go in. This allows for us to win despite have far less scoring shots than the opposition as the goal kickers are in a better position...
