    Squad for Saturday

    Swans squad for Saturday

    SYDNEY v COLLINGWOOD, Newcastle, 1.30pm

SYDNEY: Barry Hall, Nick Davis, Jarrad McVeigh, Ben Mathews, Ryan O'Keefe, Craig Bolton, David Spriggs, Ben Fixter, Paul Williams, Stuart Maxfield, Nic Fosdike, Adam Schneider, Stephen Doyle, Darren Jolly, Tadhg Kennelly, Heath James, Leo Barry, Jude Bolton, Matthew Nicks, Sean Dempster, Jason Ball, Mark Powell, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Brett Kirk, Amon Buchanan, Tim Schmidt, Adam Goodes, Paul Bevan.

Notable excusions - O'Loughlin, Ablett, Saddington, Schauble and Crouch and none of the rookie listed players.

So pretty much our best available side going into Round One with Davis and Goodes named. Would think O'Loughlin is the only player missing this week that has a strong chance of playing Round One. Schaubs and Crouch are very slim chances and Saddo would likely spend a few weeks in Canberra to start the season to get some match fitness into him (no point risking his knee in a senior AFL match first match back from a knee reco).

Hopefully we can get a win up to build a little momentum going into the Round One match against the Hawks.

Schabule's definately now out of Rd 1, confirmed by Roos.

Backline for Rd 1 could look like this.

    B: Crouch/Bevan James C Bolton
    HB: Kennelly/Dempster Goodes Leo Barry

Still fairly strong on paper, and should be too strong for Hawthorns forwards (lack of).

I'm still very uncomfortable with Goodes at CHB. LRT needs as much game time as he can so his form doesn't decline due to him being played all over the shop.

at least if goodes is in the backline he can help out when everitt goes forward.........I do agree with LRT not being moved around too much.

I don't feel comfortable with James in defence. He gives away stupid free kicks or makes mistakes which can result in goals.

            Squad for Saturday

A few interesting selections Tim Schmidt seems to have overcome his earlier hamstring problems, he has some good skills the question was always his aerobic fitness.

Mark Powell to be honest is a bit of a mystery can take a great grab but still appears to lack upper body strength.
Nic Fosdike must still be in the mix for a midfield role but for me he just does not do enough.
            cheers Ian

I never saw much of Schauble. He wasn't really standing out to me much IMO.

                ???

Do you mean ever? Like, never ever, like?
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Now that could be because he missed the first 14 matches through injury then played one in the reserves so when he returned he was still lacking hard match fitness.

I think they are being cautious with Schauble because when he does sustain an injury he seems to need a long recovery period, and if we are to win the premiership this year we need him fully fit.
                    cheers Ian

I would agree with the fitness, if in fact his fitness is still down.
however, why is he more likely to risk re-injuring his knee in an AFL game than a match in Canberra ?

I dont know where this idea comes from ?

Not sure what the reasoning was, but Roos has already said that Saddington will spend 4 or 5 weeks in the reserves before being considered for a senior game.

Must be fitness then, because he is just as likely to braek down in Canberra as anywhere else. I do seem to remember he did not start training until later than most.

Risk as in match fitness and confidence in the knee itself.

Yes the likelyhood of him doing his knee again is no different in Canberra than in the seniors. But when Saddo comes back into the senior whenever that is we want him ready to fire, not looking to gain confidence in the knee.

Regarding Saddo: might the fact that he hasn't played football in 10 months, be a legitimate reason for him playing a few in the seconds?
