    Roos embarassed

    Roos embarrassed by Swans' effort
    5:38:08 PM Sun 13 April, 2003

    afl.com.au

Sydney Swans coach Paul Roos said he was embarrassed by his side?s performance in the first half when the Swans were out-scored 11 goals to four by a desperate Adelaide.

The Crows bounced back strongly after their loss to St Kilda last weekend with a 27-point victory at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Roos admitted Adelaide had more incentive to win after losing to the Saints.

?They kicked five goals in four minutes - two at the end of the first quarter and three at the end of the second - and that is difference at the end of the game,? Roos said.

The Crows responded to each of Sydney?s opening five goals with one of their own within two minutes which Roos put down to lack of concentration.

?At times guys were not doing what they were suppose to be doing, Bode kicks a goal [with 20 seconds to go in first quarter] from the midfield pushes to the forward contest and no-one picks him up and goal.

?It?s not that hard but guys are not prepared to do what we asked them to do.?

During the week Roos said Sydney spent many hours at training being drilled on stoppages - a fundamental part of Adelaide?s game.

?The way we thought they would play they did and they won the game.?

After trailing by 45 points at half-time, Sydney lifted its intensity to out-score the Crows by three majors which frustrated Roos.

?We knew it was going to be a hard game but it is disappointing in terms of talent.

?They have got some top end talent, they have some really good players and it was always going to be a big challenge for us to combat that talent.

?It is a difficult question to answer on why guys would turn up to play and be ready to play from the moment the ball bounces and to come in at half-time five or six down and then to start.

    ?I don?t know it?s just mind-boggling.?

I actually don't give a stuff if Roos is embarrassed... what I care about is whether the PLAYERS are embarrassed enough about their effort to change it!

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

These are all the same sorts of comments Eade used to make in the post-match comments...

And it's the same culprits who have been giving us this crap for the past 5 seasons.

How some these blokes can put out their hands for their weekly pay cheques is beyond me.

How much are they on, $150,000+. All us ticketholders help pay their wages. When are we going to get a return on our money from some of these overpaid imposters.

And I thought we were going to be a lot better than the pundits were predicting. Now I'm embarrassed.

        I'm sick of mediocrity.

It's obvious after reading Roos' comments that the players had no excuse for not being prepared for Adelaide - clearly they'd trained for it, I can understand his frustrations as we've seen them not turning up to play before under Eade.

I think it was obvious even to the commentators on TV that the players didn't seem 'alive' until the second half.

I am slowly, but finally, coming around to the view that we do need that mega clearance sale at the end of this year. Some of my favs of the past years are simply not delivering and are in fact costing us more than the give. Sad as it is for me to say, maybe its time for Saddo, Nicks, Frosty, Warfe, Leo, to look for employment in the SANFL or VFL next season. Even saddo's haircut didn't help yesterday...a very very disappointing performance...and nicks...he used to be pretty good, but he's spent too much time down back to be a goal kicker...maybe give him a few more games to redeem himself in the backline...
Roosie has to put these guys on notice that efforts like that first half are simply not acceptable. We have a 70-year history of mediocrity and underachievement which MUST stop NOW!
"Davis...Davis has kicked 2...he snaps from 40...dont tell me, dont tell me, hes kicked a goal....unbelievable stuff from Nick Davis, can you believe this, he's kicked 3 final quarter goals and Swans are within 3 points..."

Well it's pretty obvious (I would have thought) that he is talking about Nicks, Warfe, MacPherson, J Bolton and probably in that order. Just don't have the skills to match it with top players. Compare Nicks with Schneider or O'Keefe when having a shot from 35 - exactly.

Nowadays Nicks can't win the ball (either in midfield or half back flank) and then when presented with scoring opportunities is not very likely to take them (I did laugh when the AFL average came up on the screen as %75 for Nicks at the end of the first quarter).

Compare J Bolton and MacPherson with Ablett, Schneider, Powell, Dempster, Fixter etc when it comes to QUICKLY finding a man when you get a split second's possession in close. This is possibly the most critical component of footy and they just can't do it. Admittedly Crouch and Fosdike weren't much better on the day.

Bode, MaCleod and a bunch of Adelaide youngster no-names can find a team mate backwards with their eyes closed and before their Swan suppose tagger has looked around to see who has got the ball!!!

              Scheesch!

'member when Nicks used to set up our attack running out from halfback..why has he become a forward?

As mentioned before, I am sick of seeing opposition players left unmarked or unchecked.

But how long before the roos regime does anything about this? Is there still pressure from the board to leave marketable players in the seniors even if they are not performing?

A number of players were quite ordinary, and as a group they may not have followed instructions to the letter, but Roos also has to accept some responsibility for an average day in the coaches box.

Williams is struggling to break his tags (and he's getting all the attention in the absence of Cressa), so Plan A has to be to have him run with one of their best (eg. McLeod), as he did during the second half of 2001.

Admittedly they have tried that in the last couple of weeks, so Plan B has to be implemented, which is to free him up by playing across half-back for a while.

Roos also just couldn't get any match-ups right in defence against a flexible Adelaide forward line. Just like we've done to other teams in recent times with the likes of Magic and Goodes, Ayres made Schauble and Saddington somewhat redundant by having his tall forwards regularly move a fair way from goal. Fixter is needed badly to play on the likes of Farmer and Ladhams.

Warfe and Stevens are not bench players - if they're not in the starting 18 then their value in the 22 has to be questioned. Probably not enough depth of midfielders currently available to take those spots, but we really need a guy like Stevens to be playing. If that is in the reserves then fine, but he's no chance to develop coming on and off the bench.

The forward line just isn't functioning with:
                  • Davis still far from fit and unable to keep providing a target
                  • Nicks offering little as discussed elsewhere
                  • Stevens coming on and off the bench with little opportunity to work himself into the game
                  • Schneider playing as an individual option and not as a designated crumber to stand at Hall's feet

It wore very thin when Eade publicly criticised the players, then rewarded them with a regular spot in the side - Roos needs to send a message by being tough on someone like Nicks.

That said there aren't too many options available to Roos until Fixter, Seymour, Sundqvist etc are fit.

Davis seemed to do his best work when running through half-back/centre in the first term. Perhaps thats another option if things don't work down forward.

Nicks MUST go to the half-back flank if he's to survive to next year.

Stevens I agree must have four quarters of footy regularly if he's to reach his potential.

I too feel it is time for Roos to start getting really angry with players and for the players to understand that oppositions might get a bit put off - if we stand up and start playing dececnt football. Roos needs to know these things. Has anyone emailed Roos at the club and suggested Nicks go to half back or for Roos to give Powell etc a go in place of players he feels aren'g putting in.

As far as telling Saddo etc he is now wanted - bit late after he has signed a further contract for two years I think.

I want to see Roos get tough real tough with players and want to see the Swans team seen as tough. As said before we are playing their wages and we need returns. Don't mind if they get beaten if they give 100% continually. But we are getting about 30% return or effort put in.

Swans players and team need to get a different outlook on their play. They also need to be seen differently "not the pushovers". Roos has heaps to g give to the team and the club and wants to - but for some reason the players seem to certainly go missing.

I for one will be faxing or emailing Roos and the team and put my suggestions forward to the club. I think they also need to know about sydneyswans.com.au as well as what's happened to "Ask Roosy". Club needs to stand up and deliver to the fans.

Things must be bad only 350 spots in Sydney Boys High School now reserved rest are open slather for whoever want. Makes it really difficult for us who pay as part of our membership to park in school - have to fight for a spot with everyone.
                      Love those Swans

I often wonder that myself. Sure, he loves a goal, but so did Tilt. It doesn't make a lot of sense.

Nicks seemed to become a stop-gap forward when we lost Lockett and our forward line was struggling. For some unknown reason, he seems to have been left there, perhaps because until this year, our forward line was weaker than our backline. I think that has changed now.

It was b/w 1997 and 1999 that Nicks played well as a running half-back.

During that period he was a 21 to 24 year-old, and was playing in a good side where his lack of accountability wasn't exposed.

It isn't a bizarre oversight that Eade and Roos haven't used Nicks across half-back in the last couple of years - HE JUST ISN'T FIT ENOUGH.

And the two main things that meant that Nicks wasn't exposed as a defender b/w '97 and '99 was:

                            a) we had a quality midfield that didn't regularly turn the ball over
                            b) flooding meant that others could often pick up Nicks' man when he was nowhere near him
