There is a wide disparity but last season the Swans weren't at the top. They were in a group of two or three teams clearly worse than the best two, though it varied depending on how many top up players were used.

Queanbeyan and, I think, Belconnen were the top two, with Ainslee in the next group with the Swans.

You would like to think, though, with the likes of Saddington, Ablett, Spriggs and Fosdike running around, we should have been far too good for anyone else. No doubt we will come back to the pack a bit as senior-level injuries take their toll.

Yep, Belconnen have won it 4 (or maybe only 3) years in a row.

Hopefully the site below will have some useful info about the reserves this year. It has the fixture, and should provide results, ladder and stats. There isnt anything about the pre-season comp.

The season proper starts next week (for us) with a match against Ainslie as a prelim to the game against the Kangaroos

The opposition in the was pretty non-existent, which can make it difficult to judge how blokes are going. With the likes of Spriggs, Fosdike, Saddington, Schmidt and Willloughby in the midfield, I haven?t seen such a strong reserves team for a long time, and that has to be good.

The first impression looking at the twos this year is that there are very few skinny kids these days. The second year players have bulked up a bit and all the new boys have a higher degree of physical development than in the past.

It seems that the reserves are being encouraged to play the ?run and gun? style. A few times one or other of the midfielders were caught HTB trying to do too much, but as the scoreboard showed they were generally successful.

Saddo looked confident, his judgement of the ball in the air was spot on, ran and marked well. He?ll be back pretty soon.

Spriggs and Fosdike had picnics. Spriggs displayed the usual quota of mongrel kicks, but unlike others I don?t think he is a lost cause. Given time to steady he gave some decent delivery and kicked two nice long goals. I have the feeling that accurate delivery when on the hard run is where he needs to work.

Eriksson has finally put on some bulk, and created a couple of goals from his good tapwork. Most encouraging.

Tim Schmidt is starting to impress. He is one midfielder who can hit a target lace out from 45m and did so several times yesterday.

Nick Potter was very busy, always at the bottom of the packs. His was one of the goals the scoreboard missed, a terrific snap under heavy pressure. Paul Bevan clone in gamestyle.

Nick Malceski is another looking good, confidence right back and marked well. Kicking for goal very ordinary though.

Dempster was impressive in the backline, but because of the midfield dominance he spent most of the game working on his suntan.

Mark Powell continues to frustrate. Reads the ball in the air well, but then drops the easy mark. I see this nearly every time he plays. Well down in the pecking order now.

Jarred Moore flashed in and out, but what he did was clean and well executed in the main. Ed Clarke seems to have gone backwards since North Sydney, didn?t get a lot of gametime.

Just wondering about the impression that Dempster is creating for anyone who has been watching him. Is he a possibility for CHB? He appears to be the type of player that can play a little bit taller than he actually is. Is this the right impression or is he just too small and better suited to the HBF or wing?

Also wondering about the impression of Campbell and Vogels as potential CHBs as well. Are they a chance? Otherwise I can see us going back to Saddo as CHB if LRT doesn't settle down.

I was also wondering who the choice is to be for the "nominated rookie" at this stage.

Any comments much appreciated.

Dempster is only about ROK size, but plays tall because he is a clean ?one grabber?. His running out of defence has been a feature this year, he?s a long kick of the footy and can kick goals. Too small to handle a J Brown type CHF, I guess this is why some have suggested HBF to release Kennelly onto the wing. If he holds form and avoids injury he will debut this year at some stage.

Vogels and Campbell both played forward this week. Vogels is the more impressive of the two right now. As Liz pointed out pre-season, if there is a nomination it will depend on need as much as which of the rookies is playing the best. ATM I think that Vogels and Potter are going better than the other rookies.

The player list in the record did not have a name for No. 49. A Vogel clone playing on HB line.

Fair size unit for 20, listed at 195cm and 95kg.

He's listed at 192cm (and ROK has officially shrunk to 187cm per the Swans site but is still listed at 190cm in the AFL pocket guide). HBF seems to be the obvious place to start him, though I wouldn't be surprised to see him develop into a key position defender.

Is anyone else curious about Roos' reluctance to move Kennelly further up field? He has, on several occasions, nominated Kennelly as a player who could become a top-line player and indicated that he will eventually play further up the ground. He says that Kennelly is still developing and needs more time on the HBF.

But he's never looked lost further up the ground and to me he looks bored senseless where he is at the moment. He has developed decent defensive skills but they are never going to be his strength and he doesn't have Leo's extraordinary ability to keep much taller opponents quiet.

In the team photo (in March Swans mag) there are four blokes together up back who appear to be within 1cm of each other - Nicky D, C Bolts, Alice and Dempster. In the same row, Malceski and rookies Grundy, Vogels & Quade appear about 2cm taller

this is hard when you don't want the complete quote BUT...good assessment by royboy and, as one of the few viewers of the reserves, there is no arguement.
i watched the second half and thought Moore was sensational in the last quarter.....he looks like Diesel to me.Also, Clarke took the 'mark of the year' running backwards into a pack and taking an incredible grab. Sensational !Pity the world didn't see it.
