      Mystifying decision.

The choice, to me, seemed to be between height (for marking power, ie Dempster), and speed (to keep up with the likes of Grant, Harvey and Wells, ie Spriggs or Fosdike).

So we've gone for a short player who's not particularly quick.

      We hate Anthony Rocca
      We hate Shannon Grant too
      We hate scumbag Gaspar
      But Leo WE LOVE YOU!

Roos was interviewed and said he wanted a runner to replace Doyle. He also indicated that Ablett's good form against the Roos in the past counted in his favour. He expects Brown to play on Hall.

Heh, I don't watch him too closely (it makes it easier to resist the urge to throw something at the TV)... but I think of him being quicker than the likes of Mathews, Jude and Ablett...

Ablett improved dramatically in the 2nd half last year. If he is fit and playing well then he deserves to be in the side. With a bit of luck he might go to the next level. Just what we have been saying pre season on here we needed. Maybe we have forgotten Ablett as one of those who could jump out of nowhere.

He had plenty of fans on here last year also.

Ablett yes fair enough - What does Dempster have to do (other than add 10 KGs)

Intriguingly we are $1:50 Drifters are $2:40

I'd have my money on Ablett in a foot race with Grant any day.

He's not shown it often but Ablett has a bit of toe to him. He's no Crouch or Williams but he'd be quicker than Bolton, Mathews or Kirk, and none of them are complete snails in AFL terms either.

Grant is a very skilful player but he's only average paced - probably at a similar level to Bolton. But then brain speed is far more important than pure foot speed, and that is where Grant excels.

Ablett deserves his chance. A little unfair to simply describe him simply as a run with player - he's got some talent and I think he could impress this year.

Shannon Grant is slow for an AFL standard midfielder, like all Abletts NOG is fast but not explosive - atm.

I would expect him to become a bit of a powerhouse as he gets older and fills out

Didn't our coach say they have all beaten their PB's in running this pre season, so Ablett may have found a yard which is all he needed.

Why are people bagging Ablett? He's been improving all the time and considering that he is very strong, and very determined and a great kick to begin with then he is the logical choice.

Roosey is following my advice and picking the best 22 available players rather than particular sizes or speeds. Once you have your 22 you work out where everyone will play. (humour me!)

That relates more to endurance though, than sprint speed (it was the 3km that everyone was reported as having beaten their PBs).

Ablett is one of those players who has been gradually improving his endurance. He didn't come to the club as a super fit player and had niggling injuries for his first couple of year that wouldn't have helped.

I also read / heard somewhere (maybe the report from the guernsey presentation?) that either Williams or Maxfield has taken Ablett under his wing recently and has been working with him on his focus on his football. Assuming luck with injuries I reckon we're going to see a big improvement from him this year.
