While I agree that the first half was shockingly boring, it didnt help that the commentators seemed to have already decided before the first ball-up that the game was going to be boring.

And during all the previews for this game, whether it was newspaper or TV, everyone was hoping that Brisbane would smash us to teach us a lesson.

So very very happy that we won .

Hi all, I just arrived back in Sydney from Brisbane. Great night and great party afterwards. I drove past the Pineapple this morning on the way to the airport and looked to see if there were any red and white bundles snoring in the gutter. There weren't so I guess everyone got home alright in the intervening 36 hours (hi Ian, Jules, Peter).

I thought I'd have a look at RWO and I think there may be a clear division between anyone who was there at the game and those watching on TV. It certainly wasn't a crap game. The Manuka one certainly was but the Gabba game was two very tough teams going head to head. There were few scoring shots because neither team gave an inch. If we'd played open running footy in that first half we'd probably be looking at Port Adelaide's woeful scoreboard vs the Crows. In the second half, both teams were too tired to maintain the close contests (interesting that Lions fans think that Sydney floods but the Lions just tackle really well). And the Brions were running away with it. Only abysmal accuracy by them left us with a glimmer of hope. Then in the final quarter we just blew them open as everyone observed.

I'd suggest that if you think it was a crap game you weren't there. All over the ground it was an arm wrestle (literally). And last week I thought we might get outmuscled by the Lions - it didn't happen and they blinked first.

I have yet to see the TV coverage but may just use that last quarter as one of those magic quarters to watch over and over when life seems depressing.

            See you at the SCG?

could be a fair point. I think because the commentators on tv turned up with the attitude that the swans were going to be boring, it influenced their commentary. Therefore it may well have been an intriguing tight tussle, but they saw it as dull and boring due to their preconceptions.

I've seen plenty of tight, uncompromising, arm-wrestle styles of games and they don't necessarily have to have soccer scorelines.

During the game I watched it with the sound turned down as I could not stand Blight any longer. Since watching it 8 more times (gee I must be depressed, reference the post above) I have been brave enough to have the sound on and you can tell from Tim Lane's voice that he has no connection to Blight at all. Tim is trying to make the commentary interesting with metaphors and quips and Blight is just winge winge winge and finally begrudges some compliments. Tim's reference to the game being like Muhummad Ali's fight where he took punishment for lots of rounds and wearing out his opponent, and then throwing a few winning punches of his own was spot on.

interesting. i was cheering and applauding him for speaking his mind while being articulate in his criticism.

then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

The problem with this analogy is I don't think it was part of the game plan. If it was then it is a horrible one and extremely dangerous and in most cases we would not have won.

Also, I think Tim and Quarters were just as bored in the first half.

We were at both Manuka and the Gabba and the contrast between two live matches couldn't have been greater. The former was woeful, the latter was totally competitive. After watching Saturday night's match live, we then watched the replay on Fox Footy back at the hotel. From the opening bounce and even before, Blight and Quartermaine started in with the negative comments. If I hadn't just come from the game, it would have set the tone for how I was going to view it.

I'll concede the first half was a low-scoring war of attrition, but both sides were guilty of negative tactics - not just us!

At half-time, I raised my eyes heavenward and hubby predicted we would come back in the last quarter and probably win it. I thought he was a bit delusional and didn't dare hope until we came within 19 points.

I have to say that I haven't sung the team song so enthusiastically since the 1996 Plugger point. We were surrounded by beer-swilling boofy blokes who couldn't believe we'd snatched victory. The funniest comment though came from a woman in front of me who said "You wouldn't want to lay a finger on Barry Hall". Talk about irony! That and the fact the offender was serial thug Chris Scott.

IAWTP. Blight was saying what he saw - with fresh perspective as well.

The first half was probably the worst contested sporting event I have seen in recent memory (the umpires did not help either). I started to regret buying my membership for a while there. I don't care if we lose but at least go down fighting! Plus if the sport becomes over-officiated it will become too boring like basketball. The more they change the rules and "crack down" on little offences - the more they push me away from the sport.

First we get all the info on Brisbane's season thus far, then all the stuff about Voss' 250th, then we get to see them run onto the ground and through the banner, without a single mention of Sydney. I was flabbergasted. Does anyone know what was on Sydney's banner? It's not as though we didn't have a few important milestones as well...
